Wednesday marked The Feast of Mary Magdalene, and just as the left sullies all other things in life, so too did they soil this celebration.
Magdalene was a Jewish woman who, according to the four canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, traveled with Christ as one of his followers and was a witness to his crucifixion and one of the first people to learn of his Resurrection.
She has been cast as a repentant prostitute by some, as the wife of Jesus by others, although biblical scholars argue there is no substantial evidence to support either of these theories.
The Feast of Mary Magdalene today, not a reformed prostitute, but the First of the Apostles, the first to have encountered the resurrected Jesus, in John’s account (picture by Pedro Nunez del Valle in the Prado). pic.twitter.com/rxOF07G5yZ

The Catholic church recognizes Magdalene as the patron saint “of the contemplative life, converts, glove makers, hairdressers, penitent sinners, people ridiculed for their piety, perfumeries, pharmacists, sexual temptation, tanners, women.”
There was some efforts at clarity in recognizing the day:
…to the other disciples, Mary Magdalene was the church on earth, for only to her had been revealed the full Paschal Mystery.

5) She was NOT a prostitute.— James Martin, SJ (@JamesMartinSJ) July 22, 2020
On the other hand, there were plenty suggesting that Mary is a victim of sexism, and that Jesus was a “feminist and an egalitarian.”
A woman’s testimony was considered “unreliable” in Biblical times.
Having Mary Magdalene as the First Witness of the Resurrection proved women could be witnesses and religious leaders.
This is significant because it means Jesus Christ was a feminist and an egalitarian. pic.twitter.com/rFkFjhqIz0

On this feast of Mary Magdalene, a reminder from my colleague Claudia Setzer that Christianity’s central claim hinges on the testimony of a woman.
Soooooo….when will we learn to believe women?— Natalia Imperatori (@nimperatori) July 22, 2020

But accusations of sexism were tame compared to how some on the left bastardized the historical figure to suit their agenda: (** Language warning)
Knock, knock! Who’s there? More than half the Church! …happy feast of St. #MaryMagdalene — we’re reading the signs of the times in Philly!#OrdainWomen pic.twitter.com/uP3FDsFXcE

Feast of Mary Magdalene who is legit my favourite biblical babe.
Patriarchy has fucked her over but we reclaim her.
She most likely wasn’t a sex worker but let’s remember sex workers today anyway, that their rights are human rights and that sex work is work. pic.twitter.com/BS2Q0HWuKf

Yes definitely. She was made into a whole lot of things she almost definitely wasn’t and had huge parts of her identity stripped away by white men wanting a white man’s religion. She needs to be reclaimed for who she was.
