Fed up with being governed by far-left liberals, a grassroots group called “Move Oregon’s Border for a Greater Idaho” has launched an effort for Oregon’s rural and generally Trump-supporting counties to secede from Oregon and join Idaho.
This effort to redraw state lines rather than understandably dissatisfied Oregonians picking up and physically moving elsewhere has emerged against the backdrop of Oregon’s governor, attorney general, the mayor of Portland, and other Democrat officials aligning themselves with radical anarchists rather than law enforcement and law-abiding citizens in the ongoing civil unrest in Portland.
With an estimated 9,000 volunteers, Greater Idaho has collected enough signatures to put its border relocation plan on the ballot in Wallowa County, Ore. Petition drives are underway in 14 other counties.
With COVID-19 making it problematic to obtain the necessary signatures required by law, the organization has filed a lawsuit in federal court to reduce signature requirements and extend the deadline.
On its website, Greater Idaho declares that “Our message to Oregon’s state political leadership is: let our people go! Your counties have different goals, different values, and different economies. Your primary voters will be glad to get rid of ‘Trump-voting low-income counties.’ Let us be governed by a state that understands us. Please negotiate a deal with Idaho.”
“Time for a change. Time to organize. Time to secede or succumb,” the website added, quoting one of its prominent supporters.
In a press release, Mike McCarter, the leader of the group, outlined the end game.
“We want to move the border because the political atmosphere in Oregon is getting too intense. We’ve seen political violence in Portland and Eugene this year and it could get worse.
“Instead of fighting, Oregon could let citizens in each region of the state choose which state’s governance is more suitable to them. I believe eastern and southern Oregon will agree that Idaho’s governance is better suited to rural counties than Oregon’s is. Combining all taxes together, the average Idahoan paid $1753 less in taxes per year than the average Oregonian in 2018.”
Idaho’s GOP governor Brad Little is apparently supportive of the effort as are several Oregon Republican elected officials. It’s unlikely that Oregon’s current statewide political leadership feels the same way.
The legal hurdles to make this happen are immense, moreover, requiring the approval of state legislatures and Congress, assuming no vetoes are in play.
Oregon is one of many blue states in the U.S. where the liberal voting bloc (and who knows how much voter fraud is involved) in urban centers generally runs roughshod over the rest of the population.
Parenthetically, Jim Justice, West Virginia’s GOP governor, has invited Virginia counties that have declared themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries to secede and join his state. After the 2019 elections when Democrats took control of both houses of the state legislature for the first time in 20 years, Virginians found themselves subject to a far-left agenda rubber-stamped by the state’s compromised Democrat governor.
