Just days after being assigned a case with links to Jefferey Epstein, a federal judge in New Jersey saw her home come under attack, her 20-year-old son was shot dead and her husband left in critical condition.
In what proves to be an unprecedented attack in modern times, a man dressed as a Fed Ex delivery driver opened fire at the home of U.S. District Judge Esther Salas late Sunday afternoon when her husband, Mark Anderl, a well-known criminal defense attorney answered the door, according to NBC New York.
A “massive manhunt” is underway in search of the assailant.
Anderl was shot several times, and when their son, Daniel, came running to the door, he was also shot. The father survived and is hospitalized in critical condition. Daniel, who was studying law, did not survive.
Salas was reportedly in the basement at the time of the attack and was not injured.
The first Hispanic woman to serve on the federal bench in New Jersey, Salas has been in her current seat for nine years after President Barack Obama nominated her in 2010. Before that, Salas was a magistrate judge for five years, and a federal public defender for nine years.
Last week, Salas was assigned a case involving an ongoing lawsuit from Deutsche Bank investors who claim the company made false and misleading statements about its anti-money laundering policies and failed to monitor “high-risk” customers including convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, NBC News reported.
The motive for the crime is unknown at this time and there’s nothing to suggest that it was linked to any case Salas may have been involved in.
Among the high profile cases Salas has presided over are the case involving Real Housewives stars Joe and Teresa Giudice, and a case involving members of the Grape Street Crips, in connection with a long-running drug-trafficking network taken down by the FBI in 2015.
In a tweet, the FBI said they were looking for a single suspect and appealed to the public for help.
“The FBI is investigating a shooting that occurred at the home of Judge Ester Salas in North Brunswick Township, New Jersey earlier this evening, July 19. We’re looking for one subject & ask that anyone who thinks they may have relevant information call us at 1-973-792-3001,” the NJ bureau branch tweeted.

In commenting on the shooting, Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, spoke of gun control.
“Judge Salas and her family are in our thoughts at this time as they cope with this senseless act. This tragedy is our latest reminder that gun violence remains a crisis in our country and that our work to make every community safer isn’t done,” Murphy said.
In a sign of just how bizarre our world is in the year 2020, believe it or not, there were a number of zealots pointing fingers at President Donald Trump and his supporters.
Here’s a sampling of some of those responses from Twitter:
If the general population can intelligently identify probable motivation by the Trump camp, then I sincerely hope that your division will do what is necessary to bring justice to Judge Salas’ family. #trumpmob

The federal goons in Portland, suddenly executions starting up in federal death row after 17 years, the hit on this judge’s family, ALL roads probably lead back to Trump and his henchmen!

Donald Trump has a half billion dollar loan due to Deutsche bank soon. He also refuses to turn over his taxes as we all know and was a friend of Epstein. This has Trump and Barr written all over it.

So many people have been murdered in association w/ Deutsche Bank cases.
It says something very sad about the state of the USA that many of us immediately suspect the involvement of our mob POTUS* Trump & AG Barr @TheJusticeDept. We don’t trust these proven liars. Unprecedented. pic.twitter.com/HyIxZpnDQJ
