Trump tells Wallace Supreme Court ruling gave him ‘powers nobody thought he had,’ that make next few weeks game-changing

President Donald Trump sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Fox News’ Chris Wallace this week, in which he discussed a number of issues including a new “health care plan” he promised is coming within a few weeks.

Wallace began the segment by noting that hundreds of thousands of Americans who have lost jobs due to state- and city-imposed coronavirus shutdowns have applied for coverage under “Obamacare,” even as the administration fights the constitutionality of the law in federal court.

“Since the pandemic hit, millions of people have lost their jobs and thereby lost their health insurance, and almost a half a million have signed up for Obamacare. Your administration just announced that you’re signing onto a lawsuit to overturn Obamacare,” Wallace said.

“And replace it,” Trump shot back.

“Why does it make sense to overturn Obamacare which people now are relying on?” Wallace, clearly agitated, responded. “Democrats are going to say, ‘The man who wanted to kill Obamacare is going to take away your — the protection for pre-existing conditions.’”

Noting that he and Republicans managed to get rid of Obamacare’s “individual mandate” — which was included in the 2017 tax reform law — the president said that he and the GOP would make sure to protect Americans with existing health care issues.

“Pre-existing conditions will always be taken care of by me and Republicans, 100 percent,” Trump said.

Wallace pointed out that the president has been in office three-and-a-half years but has yet to come up with a plan, a statement that is factually incorrect. Just months into his term, Trump tried to repeal Obamacare and get it replaced with a more competitive alternative, but the then-GOP-controlled Senate would not back it.

As for the new health plan, Trump provided Wallace with some additional details.

“Well, we haven’t had. Excuse me,” Trump said, interrupting Wallace. “You heard me yesterday. We’re signing a health care plan within two weeks, a full and complete health care plan that the Supreme Court decision on DACA gave me the right to do. So we’re going to solve — we’re going to sign an immigration plan, a health care plan, and various other plans. And nobody will have done what I’m doing in the next four weeks.”

Trump was referring to a high court decision last month stating that he could not immediately rescind the Obama-era Deferred Action on Childhood Arrival executive order because he had not followed provisions of the Administrative Procedure Act.

“The Supreme Court gave the president of the United States powers that nobody thought the president had, by approving, by doing what they did — their decision on DACA. And DACA’s going to be taken care of also,” the president said, without elaborating.

“But we’re getting rid of it because we’re going to replace it with something much better. What we got rid of already, which was most of Obamacare, the individual mandate. And that I’ve already won on,” Trump continued.

“And we won also on the Supreme Court. But the decision by the Supreme Court on DACA allows me to do things on immigration, on health care, on other things that we’ve never done before. And you’re going to find it to be a very exciting two weeks,” he said.
