Chance the Rapper was blasted on social media after he publicly expressed his support for fellow musician and fashion mogul Kanye West’s 2020 presidential bid instead of presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
In addressing his eight million-plus followers on Twitter, Chance asked them why they backed the long-serving Democrat instead of West, who launched his independent presidential bid last week saying he wanted to realize the “promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future.”
“Are u more pro biden or anti ye and why? I get that you’ll want to reply that you’re just tryna “get trump out” but in this hypothetical scenario where you’re replacing Trump, can someone explain why Joe Biden would be better??” Chance — whose real name is Chancelor Johnathan Bennett — wrote.

Chance followed up that message with a second tweet indicating his support for West.
“I finally got the answer now. I understand. Yall trust Biden more than yall trust Ye. I think I understand why, I just don’t feel the same way,” wrote.

In a follow-up retweet of a video from West honoring his mother’s birthday, Chance — who is a close friend of West — said, “And yall out here tryna convince me to vote for Biden. Smfh.”

Scores of his Twitter followers were taken aback, while others were angry and dismissive.

It says a whole lot about you.
You really can’t be serious this morning. Y’all might be friends, but him leading the whole country is baffling.
As one of his surrogates – what is ye’s plan?! The ppl waiting to hear …

We trust Biden more than we trusted your last album.

Because he’s a lifetime politician who served 8 years as Vice-President, not a rapper with mental health issues

You really want to use that to support Mr. “Slavery was a choice”

If you use your platform to encourage Black people to vote for Kanye West, who has no chance of being elected to office, you will simply help re-elect racist Donald Trump.

Thank you. This is so ignorant and people are falling right into the plan, Kanye is helping TRUMP! Kanye will never be elected and they want him to take the black vote. Be smart folks. Stay awake!!! We can’t take 4 more Trump years.

As for West’s presidential run, interestingly enough he ‘announced’ that he would make a White House bid in 2020 almost five years ago.
During an acceptance speech in which he admitted he was high on pot, West told an MTV Video Music Awards audience:
We’re going to teach our kids to believe in themselves. I don’t know what I’m going to lose after this. It don’t matter, though. It ain’t about me. It’s about ideas. People with ideas. People who believe in truth. And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I am running for president in 2020.
Shortly after announcing his White House bid last week, West — a longtime vocal supporter of President Donald Trump — said he didn’t back him anymore.
“I’m taking the red hat off,” West told Forbes. “It looks like one big mess to me. I don’t like that I caught wind that he hid in the bunker [when protesters swarmed the White House gates last month amid ongoing protests stemming from the George Floyd incident].
But he didn’t criticize President Trump beyond that, saving his harshest remarks for Biden, whom he dismissed as a racist and someone who is “not special.”
In addition, West criticized the Democrat Party for taking black voters for granted election after election, saying it is “a form of racism and white supremacy.”
“Joe Biden? Come on, man! Obama is special. Trump is special. We say Kanye West is special. America needs special people that lead. Joe Biden is not special,” West added in his Forbes interview, noting he would run on the GOP ticket if Trump weren’t already on the ballot.
He then recounted how Democrats threatened him after he came out in support of Trump.
“I was told that if I voted on Trump, my music career would be over,” he said. “I was threatened into being in one party. I was threatened as a black man into [supporting] the Democratic party.
“That’s what the Democrats are doing emotionally to my people: Threatening them to the point where this white man can tell a black man if you don’t vote for me, you’re not black,” he said.
