The Democrat law firm that is handling the defense of accused serial sex offender and Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein helped itself to millions in coronavirus-related Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funding despite earnings of more than $400 million last year, the Free Beacon reported.
The Boies Schiller Flexner firm, which also represented former Vice President Al Gore’s campaign and was founded by former Gore lawyer David Boies, applied for and received between $5 million and $10 million in PPP assistance.
But the firm earned in excess of $400 million in gross revenues last year, putting it at near the top of the highest-grossing firms in the world, the news outlet reported, citing The American Lawyer.
“The multinational firm’s partners took home more than $3.3 million on average in 2019, but it still capitalized on the taxpayer bailout that was designed to help mom-and-pop shops,” the Free Beacon added.
The firm declined to comment to the news outlet other than to say the funding was needed to save 490 jobs.
Boies Schiller Flexner has deep ties to Democratic political circles. Boies represented the former vice president during his Supreme Court battle in 2000 in the landmark Bush v. Gore case that ultimately led to then-GOP nominee George W. Bush winning Florida’s electoral votes and the presidency.
Also, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, the firm’s employees have already donated roughly $300,000 to Democratic political candidates, or more than 99 percent of the total contributions, during the 2020 election cycle.
More than $40,000 has been given to presumptive nominee Joe Biden, in addition to Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.), Sen. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.), and Sen. Doug Jones (D., Ala.).
Also, the firm’s employees donated more than $430,000 in total to Democrat candidates to help the party retake control of the House of Representatives in 2018.
The law firm secured the forgivable PPP loan April 28, weeks after the program burned through its initial $350 billion in funding.
Boies is known for representing Weinstein against multiple sexual assault allegations. He also once represented Theranos, an ultimately fraudulent blood-test startup, and served on that now-defunct company’s board.
Other top Democrat entities have received PPP funding.
In a separate report, the Free Beacon noted Monday that the Albright Stonebridge Group, a consulting firm that employs former Chinese government officials and has strong staff ties to Biden, received as much as $5 million in coronavirus relief funds.
Described as a Washington-based “commercial diplomacy firm,” the group “connects multinational businesses and nonprofits with political powerbrokers in the United States and abroad,” the Free Beacon reported, adding that it “is chaired by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.”
Records indicate that the firm received between $2 million and $5 million, though again, PPP was designed to assist small businesses and help them keep employees on the payroll while they were ordered closed by governors to curb the spread of COVID-19.
It’s important to note that the virus originated in China, and the Trump administration has locked horns with Beijing over several issues including trade and China’s ongoing militarization of the South China Sea.
In fact, China is the Albright firm’s “largest single country practice,” according to its website.
“We work to create allies within the Chinese system through an approach that emphasizes systematic engagement with agencies and non-government stakeholders at the central, provincial, and local levels,” the site notes further.
In yet another report, the Free Beacon notes that Democrat-aligned Media Matters also received as much as $2 million in PPP loans even as the Left-wing site blasted the Trump administration’s coronavirus response.
The organization was founded by Clinton loyalist David Brock in 2004.
“Media Matters is bankrolled by the Democracy Alliance, one of the largest progressive donor groups in the country. The deep-pocketed philanthropy network has steered hundreds of millions of dollars to liberal groups since it was founded in 2005—and pledged to distribute $100 million in 2020 alone,” the Free Beacon reported.
