The politicization of the death of George Floyd has had a wide range of effects in the United States.
Looking beyond the physical landscape, which is now devoid of a number of historical landmarks, courtesy of intolerant left-wing social justice zealots, how the media writes about the race narrative has now changed.
Hell, even Fox News is on board.
The company announced Monday that Fox News Media will capitalize “Black” when it is used as an adjective to describe people, a community or culture.
The Associated Press changed its writing style guide June 19 to capitalize the “b” in the term Black “when referring to people in a racial, ethnic or cultural context.”
This being Juneteenth, a day which commemorates when the last enslaved African Americans learned they were free 155 years ago.
John Daniszewski, AP’s vice president of standards, write that the move will convey “an essential and shared sense of history, identity and community among people who identify as Black, including those in the African diaspora and within Africa.”
“The lowercase black is a color, not a person,” he added.
As for white people, Daniszewski said “we are continuing to discuss within the U.S. and internationally whether to capitalize the term white.”
For now, two races and two standards at AP.
And while it took Fox News Media a little over two weeks to join in, “after consulting with its diversity team and researching the history of language, culture and customs,” the company did make a decision on other colors commonly used to describe a race.
Terms such as “White and “Brown,” also will be capitalized when used as adjectives, coinciding with the recommendation by the National Association of Black Journalists, Fox News Media shared.
The New York Times has an interesting justification for not capitalizing the “w” when writing about white people, claiming it has been “long favored” by white supremacists.
“We will retain lowercase treatment for ‘white.’ While there is an obvious question of parallelism, there has been no comparable movement toward widespread adoption of a new style for ‘white,’ and there is less of a sense that ‘white’ describes a shared culture and history. Moreover, hate groups and white supremacists have long favored the uppercase style, which in itself is reason to avoid it,” the newspaper said.
The Times will keep using “brown” in the lowercase as a racial or ethnic description.
AP acknowledged at the time that the move was prompted by Floyd’s death, saying the debate had “accelerated in many U.S. newsrooms in recent weeks as journalists grappled with massive protests and sweeping changes in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death at the hands of police.”
The article noted that the Los Angeles Times, USA Today and NBC News embraced capitalization of Black a week prior to its decision. The National Association of Black Journalists did as well.
As for Fox, consistency was apparently a motivating factor.
“This noteworthy style change ensures terms such as ‘Black’ and ‘White’ are consistent with FOX News Media style for other words used to describe racial and ethnic groups, such as Asian, African American, Latino, Hispanic and Native American – which are also capitalized,” Fox News media reporter Brian Flood said.
