Long-serving “Entertainment Tonight” co-host Mary Hart was as the master of ceremonies ahead of President Donald Trump’s Independence Day rally at Mount Rushmore Friday evening, sparking no shortage of outrage from liberals on social media.
And while many users expressed shock that she appears to be conservative, it shouldn’t: She’s been backing the GOP for years.
Hart, who is from South Dakota (where the monument is located) and was Miss South Dakota in 1970, appeared as ET’s co-host from 1981 to 2011. During that period, she appeared with several male co-hosts, the most notable of whom was John Tesh, who left the show in 1996.
During the 2016 campaign, though, she was reportedly backing Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida for the GOP nomination, The Hollywood Reporter noted:
In May, before Carly Fiorina officially became a candidate, Jerry Perenchio, the billionaire who helped build Univision, hosted a fundraiser for her (at $8,000 a couple) at his Beverly Hills house. In September, actor-singer Pat Boone hosted Mike Huckabee at a house in Beverly Hills for $500 a person, though some influencers in Hollywood attended free, according to insiders.
On Oct. 22, a Los Angeles fundraiser for Marco Rubio will be co-hosted by former Entertainment Tonight host Mary Hart and her producer husband, Burt Sugarman. At a Ben Carson event in Anaheim in September, “several celebrities who are shopping for a candidate” showed up, says Shawn Steel, the RNC rep for California, though he declined to name them, citing “bias in Hollywood.”
Hart and Tesh reunited in February on ET, in which they discussed a number of topics including Tesh’s battle with cancer, which Hart said she didn’t know about.
But despite her long and successful run on the show, all of that was cast aside following her appearance as Trump’s Mount Rushmore rally MC Friday.
“When fans saw Hart at the event, many were taken by surprise, which was soon replaced with anger directed at her for not only supporting the President but also hosting an event for him. Ironically, while the President seems hell-bent on getting rid of the “cancel culture”, internet users began canceling Hart,” entertainment gossip site Meaww reported.
“So add Mary Hart to the Scott Baio/Dean Cain list of Trump supporting has-beens,” one user wrote.
“Mary Hart is a horrible person for doing this,” added another.
“Mary Hart was on Sabrina The Teenage Witch once. She seemed nice. Kellyanne Conway was on a @JohnFugelsang show on Current TV I wrote for. She seemed nice. Turns out affable social skills do not reveal character. Supporting a white supremacist does,” writer Frank Conniff added.

Native Americans protesting at Mount Rushmore are OBEYING the law.
Trump is the one VIOLATING it.
He doesn’t give a damn about the law.

She should have insured her reputation instead of her legs.

“Hart became a household name and was a permanent fixture on television from many years after her show ‘Entertainment Tonight’ became a smashing success. She earned many fans after her stint on television. But these fans seem to be having second thoughts on their adoration towards her after watching her extend support to Trump,” Meaww added.
“White Supremacy is a sickness. Mary Hart, who used to be on TV eons ago, is at Mt. Rushmore talking about her values + connection to the land. As she + 1000s there desecrate the land of Native sovereign nations who specifically warned of the #coronavirus threat they’re creating,” another Twitter user posted.
Others, however, praised Hart and were respectful of her appearance and the event — Independence Day — she helped commemorate.
Good to see Mary Hart at Mt. Rushmore
