Retired NFL defensive end Marcellus Wiley may soon get a first-hand taste of just how intolerant the left is today, after the host of FOX Sports 1’s “Speak For Yourself” opted to explain why it’s a bad idea for the NBA to paint “Black Lives Matter” on the floor of basketball courts.
In an indication of just how much control prima donna millionaire players have in a league where better than 80% of the players are people of color — the demographics of season ticket holders is the flip side of that, with 85% being white — the NBA said this week social justice messages will be allowed on the backs of jerseys instead of the last names of players during the upcoming restart of the NBA season.
In addition, the NBA reportedly plans to paint “Black Lives Matter” on courts when the season resumes, and Wiley brilliantly articulated why that’s not a good idea.
“It’s not a good idea,” the former NFL player said. “I do want to give players credit for their flex to even get this to be more than an idea, but something that is going to be in reality. I give the players that.”
(Despite a progressive commissioner in Roger Goodell, who is determined to prove how “woke” he is, owners in the NFL still have some control in that league.)
“But there’s a problem when you start to go down this road of freedom of expression, freedom of speech, and how much social space is allowed for those who don’t support in that same space,” he said. “And that’s where I wonder where this is going to go in terms of identity politics.”
Without a trace of partisanship, Wiley explained the perils of slicing and dicing the American population.
“We know what identity politics does — it divides, and it polarizes,” he said. “No matter how you want to look at it, that’s just the effect of it, no matter how great the intentions are. We all know the road to hell is paved with good intentions.”
Wiley, an Ivy League sociology graduate from Columbia University, then displayed the very thing the left abhors: free thinking and discerning the truth for oneself.
“It’s an interesting play right here,” he continued. “I don’t know how many people really look into the mission statement of Black Lives Matter, but I did. And when you look into it, there’s a couple of things that jump out to me. And I’m a black man who has been black and my life has mattered since 1974. And this organization was founded in 2013 and I’m proud of you but I’ve been fighting this fight for me and for others a lot longer.”
“Two things: My family structure is so vitally important to me,” he said. “Not only the one I grew up in but the one I am trying to create right now. Being a father and a husband, that’s my mission in life right now. How do I reconcile that with this, the mission statement that says, ‘We dismantle the patriarchal practice. We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement.'”
The former athlete did a deep dive on the disadvantages of single-parent homes, and how so many children in those homes “found themselves outside of their dreams and goals and aspirations.”
“So when I see that as a mission statement for Black Lives Matter, it makes me scratch my head,” Wiley said.
As bad as that may be for the radical left movement, Wiley then committed what they consider the cardinal sin — he cast doubt on the whole white privilege narrative.
“When I also see their mission is to eradicate white supremacy — in 2020, white supremacy is the mission. That’s a lot of digging through minutiae right there,” he said. “I’m on a show that I’m hosting with another black guy who is hosting with me who replaced another black guy, and that’s just one example of it.”
“So, I understand, I respect your space. I respect what you’re protesting for. But will you respect others who don’t support that same protest?” Wiley asked.
Of course, we already know the answer to that question — not only is the answer no, it’s hell no.
Here’s a quick sampling of the responses to the story from Twitter:
Powerful & very well done by @marcelluswiley. Well worth watching.
Is there room for respectful dissent to the demands of BLM? https://t.co/04LtzhGH1N— Megyn Kelly (@megynkelly) July 3, 2020
Wow. Brave and bold!

The organization hijacked the name of an honorable movement. We can all agree black lives matter as much as any lives. We can support our black brothers and sisters. But we can’t support an organization that really isn’t even about the name it wears.

Nah, he’s right. BLM mission statement basically talks about getting rid of the heterosexual black man and the black nuclear family. They really don’t hide it. So if you are a straight black man it is indeed an issue.

Marcellus Wiley, thank you thank you my brother. Thank you for having the guts to speak the truth in a profession that where you will get vilified for it. Best commentary I’ve heard over the airwaves in a long time 💪

Well said, @marcelluswiley Black lives matter is different than Black Lives Matter ™️

Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Larry Elder, Barack Obama all stated the same thing about the nuclear family. They are wise men because of their life experiences. Sadly most people never heard of the first 3 I named. Keep speaking the truth @marcelluswiley

@marcelluswiley dropping facts. Until we as black people start to figure out the family, nothing is going to change. All the slogans and posturing are just that. This will actually require work, and we really need to start by being honest with ourselves…👏.
