Costco has taken its popular half-sheet cakes off the market allegedly for COVID-19-related reasons, and the decision may be baked in, i.e., permanent, to the dismay of many shoppers.
The membership-only warehouse retailer is still letting its customers eat cake, but apparently primarily of the round, 10-inch variety instead.
Several weeks ago, in a caption under a Facebook video that promoted smaller graduation goodies, Costco subtly revealed that “half-sheet cakes are currently not available to order or customize.”
When available, Costco members could buy a rectangular, half-sheet cake for about $20 to supposedly feed almost 50 dessert fans for all kinds of group celebrations. That was then, however, and this is now.
“Costco’s half-sheet cakes, rectangular creations beloved by shoppers for their affordability and freshness, have long been a staple at birthday parties, graduations and other large events. But like handshakes and crowded bars, the cakes may have become another casualty of the coronavirus. Half-sheet cakes are not currently being sold at any location in the U.S., and the company has no immediate plans to bring them back…,” the New York Times reported.
According to Costco, “To help limit personal contact and create more space for social distancing, Costco has reduced service in some departments. At this time, we are not making sheet cakes for special order,” the Times added.
So far, no one has blamed this cake cancellation on President Trump, but give it time.
The Costco half-sheet cakes came in two varieties: Vanilla cheesecake topped with white buttercream frosting, and chocolate mousse with chocolate buttercream icing. Shoppers could also purchase several customized decorations for their celebrations.
Costco is, however, incrementally bringing back its in-store free samples policy, but items are now prepacked and kept behind plexiglass.
Although some Karens approved for social distancing concerns, and there is also a separate issue of following a more healthy diet, other Costco fans expressed their disagreement on social media with the corporate decision to discontinue the half-sheet cakes.
This is a stupid move. Why get rid of something that endears your customer base to your brand? I understand discontinuing it temporarily, but it makes no sense to do it permanently, even if the price rises once Covid gets under control.

. . .too bad. . .I know people who fight over the left overs at gatherings so they can stock their freezer with some go-to snack cakes. I’m not a sheet cake fan, but I’d never toss leftovers from a sheet cake from Costco.
