‘Come on out, Joe’: Biden reportedly refuses to answer Trump camp’s call for bigger debate schedule

Presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden refuses to acquiesce to President Donald Trump’s request that they debate four times versus three this election season.

As it stands, the two are scheduled for three debates slated to begin at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana on Sept. 29, or exactly 35 days until the general election.

More notably, the first debate is scheduled to happen 11 days after early voting begins in South Dakota and Minnesota, and 10 days after early voting begins in Michigan, New Jersey, Vermont, Virginia and Wyoming. See the problem?

We want fair debates. We want them sooner and we want a bigger schedule. We also don’t want them up against football games competing for viewers,” Trump 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale reportedly said in a statement this week.

As many Americans as possible need to see the stark differences between the accomplishments and leadership of President Trump and the failed record and sleepiness of Joe Biden.”

Biden’s camp has refused, thus provoking Parscale into mocking them:

The president’s campaign is specifically concerned that early voting amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic — which is inspiring people to take any steps necessary to reduce their risks of contracting the virus — will negatively impact Trump’s election results.

The president’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani has also reportedly issued some requests/demands of his own.

“Mr. Giuliani, who advised the Trump campaign in 2016, also proposed that both campaigns get to recommend a set number of moderators, and that they each get to strike some of them from the other person’s list before they reach an agreement,” The New York Times reported Thursday.

In a statement, Biden’s campaign reportedly dismissed all of the requests and accused the president of trying to distract the public.

“Six months after announcing he did not want to debate, Donald Trump — now trailing in the polls — wants to change the subject from his failed leadership, and launch a ‘campaign’ for many debates,” deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield said. “But there’s a catch: he’ll only do it if he can pick the moderators.”

“We are not going to ride the roller coaster of the ever-changing Trump campaign position on debates, nor are we going to be distracted by his demands.”

Fact-check: FALSE.

The president never announced a desire to not debate. Rather, The New York Times ran an anonymously sourced story last December claiming he was “discussing with his advisers the possibility of sitting out the general election debates in 2020 because of his misgivings about the commission that oversees them.”

However, he posted tweets around that same time revealing his misgivings with the Commission on Presidential Debates and suggesting he and Biden debate “directly” and without the commission’s interference.

Look:

This clearly isn’t the same thing as him “announcing he did not want to debate.”

Bedingfield added that Biden’s campaign will follow the rules set up by the commission “so long as Donald Trump does the same, and does not intimidate the commission into changes from past practices.”

This latest beef between the Trump and Biden campaign comes only two months after the president accused the former VP of being too scared of the coronavirus to step out of his bunker basement and debate him.

“We have a sleepy guy in a basement of a house that the press is giving a free pass to, who doesn’t want to do debates because of COVID,” he said during an April 23rd press conference. “And lots of things are happening, right?”

“And I watched a couple of interviews and I say, “Oh, I look forward to this.” But, they’re keeping them sheltered because of the coronavirus and he’s not moving around. He’s not moving too much.”
