Retired Major League Baseball star first baseman Aubrey Huff took to social media on Monday to argue against wearing masks amid the ongoing, but waning, coronavirus pandemic, which is still mandated in public spaces in many states.

The two-time World Series champ, who played for five teams over 13 seasons in the league, said he would rather die of coronavirus than live in fear.

“If you’re mask shaming, & worried about #coronavirus, please do all of us a favor who’s not afraid & stay home,” he wrote on Monday.

“If the #coronavirus is here to stay then we may as well take our masks off & get it so we can build up our immunity. At some point we’re all bound to encounter it if it’s as contagious as the “experts” say it is. And I’m not about to wear a mask the rest of my life,” he wrote in another.

Separately on Tuesday, Huff uploaded a video to Twitter to say that the “liberal left” was attempting to guilt-shame him for allegedly “threatening the lives of millions of people.”

“I posted a tweet yesterday about no longer willing to comply wearing a mask inside a grocery store,” Huff began. “And the liberal left, the soy boy professors and the blue checkmark crazy cat ladies were in unison guilt-shaming me for threatening the lives of millions of people.”

“Now, if you want to wear a mask and live in fear the rest of your life, it’s certainly your prerogative,” Huff continued. “But the vast majority of well-adjusted, sane, common-sense people that aren’t sheep, that can reason for themselves agree with me.

“I understand the coronavirus is real, and if you have pre-existing conditions or you’re an old person, and I know this sounds insensitive but someone has to say it…you are morbidly obese, then stay the f*** home,” he added.

“Just because that is your plight in life doesn’t mean the whole world has to shut down,” the former MLB star said, adding that mask-wearing checkout lane workers who he encountered during a recent trip to a grocery store looked “beat down” and haggard.

“This is not a selfish thing for me, this is a thing for me to try and free Americans so they can freely breathe,” Huff said. “It’s not healthy to breathe in your own CO2 all the time.

“It seems like everybody’s a coronavirus expert,” Huff concluded. “Look, if I, God forbid, get the coronavirus, guess what I do? I go home, I get well, and I go back and live my life. …I would rather die from coronavirus than to live the rest of my life in fear and wearing a damn mask.”

Several Twitter users disagreed with Huff, including some who wished ill of the former MLB star. (**Language warning)

Fox News noted:

Studies have shown that masks are paramount to stopping the spread and can greatly reduce airborne transmission. Experts have said that masks could actually help the economy open up sooner and allow for more freedoms — as the public will worry less about infecting those more vulnerable to the virus.

The outlet cited research led by Dr. Richard Stutt, which was conducted at the U.K.’s University of Cambridge and University of Greenwich, in which he said, “Our analyses support the immediate and universal adoption of face masks by the public.”

Also, Fox News noted that a Hong Kong study involving hamsters found that using a mask reduces the rate of non-contact transmission via respiratory droplets or particles in the air by as much as 75 percent.

But other experts disagree. They note that people wearing masks often touch or adjust them, usually without washing their hands, several times a day, which makes them virtually ineffective.

Also, William Schaffner, M.D., a professor of health policy and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University, said that while masks are effective in healthcare settings, they can be less so in the general public because most people don’t know how to wear them.

Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention doesn’t currently recommend widespread mask usage.

And the Swedish government recently declared that wearing face masks in public does little to protect you against contracting COVID-19.

“Face masks in public spaces do not provide any greater protection to the population,” Johan Carlson from the Swedish Public Health Agency Folkhälsomyndigheten told a May 13 press conference.
