Liberals and their soft-on-crime policies, rather than cops, allegedly pose the “most dangerous threat” to the African-American community.
So claims former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy in an essay that he argues refutes claims of institutional or systemic racism that has gained so much currency since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody and the protests and disorder that have followed.
“The political system, the criminal-justice system, and academe overflow with political progressives. The notion that they would tolerate racism in their institutions would be laughable if sensible people were encouraged to think about it rather than mindlessly accept it,” McCarthy asserts.
“Even if we ignore the fact that an increasing number of police officers — obviously including those involved in encounters with black suspects — are themselves African Americans, the percentage of black deaths from police shootings would be much higher if blacks were being targeted,” McCarthy insisted. “Police do not go looking for people to shoot,” he goes on to write in a National Review essay.
McCarthy, who led the legal team that prosecuted the terrorists in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, claims that in about three-quarters of fatal police shootings, the person who died was other than black despite what he considers the demagoguery that seems to be in play. He also underscored the often-cited statistic that cops killed 19 unarmed whites and nine unarmed blacks last year. He described the latter category as “vanishingly small.”
In fact, Heather Mac Donald from the Manhattan Institute noted in her piece for the Wall Street Journal that “analysis of the Philadelphia Police Department found that white police officers were less likely than black or Hispanic officers to shoot unarmed black suspect.” On the other side of the coin, “[A] police officer is 18½ times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer.”
McCarthy then addresses part of the picture in the context of police shootings that he claims that the media, activists, and politicians pretend to ignore: The victims of crime.
“The political establishment would have you assume this statistical disparity is caused by institutional racism that myopically beams police attention onto black men. But we know the statistics accurately reflect reality because crimes get reported by victims — a large percentage of whom are black (also outstripping their share of the overall population).”
“The African-American community is not a monolith. Like other segments of the American population, it is diverse and dynamic. The policies pushed by progressives damage the parts of it that need the most help. And the false narrative of racist police, which pressures law enforcement to back off from the communities most victimized by crime, is now destroying entire cities,” McCarthy concluded.
One statistic that is conspicuously absent from the argument seems to be how many lives police officers save on an annual basis, and how many of those lives are Black lives.
As One America Network’s Pearson Sharp explains, not only is there “zero evidence of racial bias in police shootings,” but police are responsible for saving “tens of thousands of black lives.”

But Pearson isn’t the only one pointing out these facts.
“Today blacks are about 13 percent of the population and continue to be responsible for an inordinate amount of crime,” Manhattan Institute’s Jason L. Riley wrote in his 2014 book, “Please Stop Helping Us.”
“Between 1976 and 2005 blacks committed more than half of all murders in the United States. The black arrest rate for most offenses — including robbery, aggravated assault and property crimes — is still typically two to three times their representation in the population. Blacks as a group are also overrepresented among persons arrested for so-called white-collar crimes such as counterfeiting, fraud and embezzlement.”
Parenthetically, Democrat politicians control the city of Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota, so if systemic racism exists, it could be argued that it seems to be occurring in liberal precincts like those.
What is disheartening about recent events is that America is a tolerant, diverse country where most of the population regardless of background, gets along well on a day-to-day basis.
In their anti-Trump compulsion, the Democrats and their radical activist/anarchist wing, along with the media (plus sanctimonious celebrities and other hangers-on) working in concert, seem intent on driving a wedge between and among people of goodwill with a fabricated narrative for political gain, no matter how much it disrupts society.
The misconduct and brutality by the Minneapolis officer in the death of George Floyd was universally condemned from day one. All four officers at the scene were immediately fired and now face criminal charges, with the officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck charged with second- and third-degree murder.
As a result of this and several other incidents, policing reform, in some manner, is coming on both the federal and state level. Defunding the police, one of the left’s agenda items, however, leaves many cities and their citizens nearly defenseless in the face of lawbreaking.
