President Donald Trump has been on a tangent lately about MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough and the death of an intern in his office in 2001, tweeting more than once on what the president has called a “cold case.”
Twitter responded to those tweets this week, as Trump doubled down on suggestions of possible foul play.
Lori Klausutis, an intern who reportedly had an undiagnosed heart condition, worked for Scarborough when he was a member of Congress — her death was ruled accidental, with a medical examiner determining that she hit her head on a desk after fainting.
Her husband, Timothy Klausutis, asked Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to delete the tweets because Trump “has taken something that does not belong to him — the memory of my dead wife and perverted it for perceived political gain.”
“My request is simple: Please delete these tweets,” he wrote in a letter.
In response to the letter, a Twitter spokesperson told Mediaite, “We are deeply sorry about the pain these statements, and the attention they are drawing, are causing the family.”
The social media platform added ominously that more efforts to censor content will be forthcoming.
“We’ve been working to expand existing product features and policies so we can more effectively address things like this going forward, and we hope to have those changes in place shortly,” the spokesperson said.
Referring to the MSNBC host as “Psycho Joe,” Trump doubled down on the tweet on Tuesday, suggesting that there are “many unanswered [and] obvious questions,” and asking whether law enforcement will address them.
In a pair of tweets, the president said: “The opening of a Cold Case against Psycho Joe Scarborough was not a Donald Trump original thought, this has been going on for years, long before I joined the chorus. In 2016 when Joe & his wacky future ex-wife, Mika, would endlessly interview me, I would always be thinking about whether or not Joe could have done such a horrible thing? Maybe or maybe not, but I find Joe to be a total Nut Job, and I knew him well, far better than most. So many unanswered & obvious questions, but I won’t bring them up now! Law enforcement eventually will?

Trump hit a nerve last week with Scarborough’s wife, Mika Brzezinski, who called the president a “sick person” for “tweeting conspiracy theories about Joe, falsely accusing him of murder.”
She also called on Dorsey to take down the tweet, asking him in a tweet to “please take my call today. Please stop allowing your platform policies to be abused by the day. It’s called libel.”
On Tuesday’s show, Scarborough addressed the issue, taking up the Klausutis family cause.
“I know all too well how much T.J. [Klausutis] has suffered, and how much — he’s told me his family has suffered… Every time they spread these lies, they’re hurting the family,” Scarborough said near the top of the show. “What the Klausutises, the entire family have had to endure for 19 years, it’s unspeakably cruel, whether it’s the president or the people following the president, it’s unspeakably cruel. These are not public figures.”
“And made worse by Twitter,” Brzezinski chimed in.
