With American struggling to deal with the realities of an unprecedented economic lockdown brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, what captures our attention can be telling.

While it may be the racial aspect, or the fact that two probable liberals are turning on one another, a video of a woman — aptly named “Karen” online — walking her dog in Central Park has gone viral.

In the clip, taken by a bird-watching African-American man, the woman is seen with her dog, who is not on a leash — she is holding the leash in her hand. Upon realizing that she is being recorded, the woman aggressively approaches the man, insisting he stop recording.

“Please don’t come close to me!” the man is heard urging the woman, who is wearing a face mask.

“Sir, I’m asking you to stop recording me,” she responded. “Please take your phone off of me.”

The man appeals to the woman repeatedly not to come close to him, as she informs him that she’s going to call the police.

“I’m going to tell them an African-American man is threatening my life,” she tells the man, who encourages her to “please” call the cops “and tell them whatever you like.”

After all, he has a video of the entire episode.

As it turns out, the most endangered participant in the encounter turns out to be the dog.

The woman is calling 911 with one hand, while holding the dog by its collar with the other. She appears to be choking the poor dog as she pulls up on the collar, forcing it to stand on his hind legs. The Cocker Spaniel begins to desperately squirm and twist, as it tries to break free from her grasp.

“I’m sorry. I’m in the Ramble and there’s a man, an African-American, he has a bike helmet, he’s recording me and threatening me and my dog,” she is heard saying on the phone.

“There is an African-American man, I am in Central Park. He is recording me and threatening myself and my dog,” she continued.

At this point, the dog is aggressively fighting to break her grip, crying out as she struggles to maintain a firm grip on the collar — this battle ramping up her emotion.

“I’m sorry, I can’t hear you either. I’m being threatened by a man in the Ramble,” she begins shrieking into the phone. “Please send the cops immediately!”

All the while, the man says nothing and is nowhere close to her immediate vicinity.

The woman was quickly doxxed online and identified as Amy Cooper.

She would be placed on administrative leave by her employer, Franklin Templeton, after social media users tagged the investment company.

What’s more, Cooper no longer has custody of the Cocker Spaniel, who turned out to be a rescue dog.

She would later offer an apology in a phone interview with NBC New York, not that this mattered much to most folks.

“I sincerely and humbly apologize to everyone, especially to that man, his family,” she said. “It was unacceptable and I humbly and fully apologize to everyone who’s seen that video, everyone that’s been offended…everyone who thinks of me in a lower light and I understand why they do.”

“When I think about the police, I’m such a blessed person. I’ve come to realize especially today that I think of [the police] as a protection agency, and unfortunately, this has caused me to realize that there are so many people in this country that don’t have that luxury,” Cooper added.

The African-American man is Christian Cooper, an avid birdwatcher who ironically shares the same last name — the video above was posted by his sister.

He told the NBC affiliate that he only asked Cooper to put her dog on the leash in the area where it’s required — the incident took place around 8 a.m. Monday morning.

“If the habitat is destroyed we won’t be able to go there to see the birds, to enjoy the plantings,” Christian explained.

Unfortunately for police, they too came out of this looking like the bad guy, with the perception being that they would have showed up and gunned the man down for no other reason than being black.
