Mayor de Blasio blasted for taking a different tone with Muslims and free meals for Ramadan than with Jews

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is being called out for his patently phony “wokeness” after offering 500,000 free Halal meals to the city’s Muslims during Ramadan.

Last week’s meal offer came ahead of de Blasio taking a much harsher tone this week with the city’s Jewish community, actually threatening to send police to round them up after attending a funeral for a rabbi in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood who reportedly died from coronavirus.

According to CNN, the mayor and his administration appear to be making an extra effort to accommodate Muslims during their holy month of Ramadan:

The coronavirus pandemic has turned life upside down for many New Yorkers, including those who wish to safely practice their faiths.

Muslims, who began the holy month of Ramadan on Thursday, are no exception. The holy month involving fasting from sunup to sundown, charity and prayer is typically celebrated as a community. But due to social distancing, that’s not possible this year.

To help families celebrate, especially those who’ve lost income due to shutdowns, New York City has announced plans to serve more than 500,000 halal meals to Muslims during Ramadan.

“One of Ramadan’s most noble callings is to feed the hungry,” de Blasio said during a press conference April 23. “It’s a crucial part of how the holiday is celebrated, to remember to be there for those in need, and that is now harder than ever.

“No New Yorker will go hungry,” de Blasio promised. “Your city will provide.”

According to the mayor’s office, some 400,000 meals will be distributed at 32 so-called “Grab and Go” sites across all five boroughs where Muslim populations are large. Another 100,000 meals will be made available through soup kitchens, community organizations, and food pantries.

And to be fair, Kosher meals are also being made available.

But certainly, there is a noticeable difference in tone from the mayor and his office this week when it came to incidents involving Jews and Muslims.

“Something absolutely unacceptable happened in Williamsburg tonite: a large funeral gathering in the middle of this pandemic. When I heard, I went there myself to ensure the crowd was dispersed. And what I saw WILL NOT be tolerated so long as we are fighting the Coronavirus,” de Blasio tweeted in response to the gathering of Jewish faithful for the funeral of Rabbi Chaim Mertz.

Freddi Goldstein, de Blasio’s press secretary, tweeted pictures of the funeral observance and noted that her boss was “on the scene” with the NYPD and was “breaking this up.”

In another tweet, de Blasio made clear he wouldn’t ‘tolerate’ any more of these violations of his orders from the Jewish community.

The mayor’s hard tone with Jews did not go over well.

The Anti-Defamation League’s CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, blasted de Blasio for “generalizing against the whole population.”

“Hey @NYCMayor, there are 1mil+ Jewish people in #NYC. The few who don’t social distance should be called out — but generalizing against the whole population is outrageous especially when so many are scapegoating Jews. This erodes the very unity our city needs now more than ever,” he tweeted.

As to the free meals for Muslims, one Twitter user called the mayor out for his supposed “wokeness.”

“Why do we Muslims deserve your gentler tone @NYCMayor? And why does your tone pit us against our Jewish cousins in this way? Treating us with a softer tone than you use for other communities, in the name of ‘wokeness’, is not only divisive, but it infantilises [sic] us. Thanks,” he wrote.

New Yorkers have also called de Blasio out for his blatant hypocrisy. Just this week, he was busted violating his own ‘stay-at-home’ order by a city resident after being driven 11 miles from his Gracie Mansion home — which is located in a park — to walk in another park.
