Democrats are once again demanding that American citizens subsidize illegal immigration by pushing the Trump administration to give so-called “Dreamers” in college coronavirus relief checks.
Without evidence, a group of Democratic senators is claiming that Dreamers have made “extraordinary contributions” to the United States during the coronavirus outbreak and thus deserve the same benefits as citizens.
“DACA recipients attending institutions of higher education across the country face challenges like other students, many with the added burden of supporting their parents and siblings or being the first in their families to attend college,” wrote more than two dozen senators in a letter to the Education Department, the Washington Times reported.
“These students should not be excluded from critical emergency financial aid. Indeed, those who are especially vulnerable to economic hardship are exactly whom these funds were designed to help.”
The senators are demanding that Education Secretary Betsy DeVos issue a rule allowing DACA recipients to qualify for some of the billions of dollars from the $2.2 trillion stimulus package passed last month that are earmarked for assistance to college students.
DeVos has said that colleges and universities can decide how best to distribute funds — either by making payments to every student or using the money for those most in need. However, she said most international students are excluded from the benefit.
The Times added:
The Education Department says it’s following sections of the Higher Education Act that generally bar non-citizens from federal financial aid. Indeed, under the law DACA students cannot apply for federal financial aid, though some states have sought to offer their own benefits.
The Senate Democrats argue the $2.2 trillion stimulus money falls outside of the restrictions in the Higher Education Act.
And they point out that while some sections of the stimulus did specifically bar illegal immigrants from aid, that’s not the case for the college money.
“The Department cannot project a specific prohibition from one section of the law to an unrelated and independent section of the law where Congress made no such prohibition,” wrote the group who were led by Sens. Michael Bennet of Colorado and Bob Menendez of New Jersey.
Dreamers have remained in the U.S. with tenuous legal status under the Obama-era executive order called Delayed Action on Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. The directive was widely panned as blatantly unconstitutional at the time because then-President Obama simply changed immigration law on his own, without congressional legislation. Obama himself even said several times before issuing the order he had no authority to do so.
President Trump attempted to rescind DACA in 2017 under the long-held principle that an executive order issued by one president could be changed or canceled by a new order from a different president.
But not this time, for some reason.
Subsequent federal courts cherry-picked by Left-wing activists who have no respect for our borders have upheld DACA as ‘constitutional.’
That said, the U.S. Supreme Court is set to decide the issue once and for all this summer.
Democrat-aligned groups have launched public relations campaigns in favor of upholding the order — as though America is governed not by a Constitution by ‘public opinion.’
In March, a coalition of immigrant rights groups petitioned the high court to reject Trump’s rescinding of Obama’s order, and of course, they’re attempting to use the coronavirus pandemic as justification.
“The public health crisis now confronting our nation illuminates the depth of those interests as borne by employers, civil society, state and local governments, and communities across the country, and especially by healthcare providers,” the groups said in a joint statement.
And Monday, The Hill reported that a Democrat-aligned polling firm claims that “a broad majority of Americans” want the Supreme Court to uphold Obama’s unconstitutional order.
“A Hart Research memo with the findings reviewed by The Hill shows the Democratic research firm suggests voters are responsive to the narrative of DACA beneficiaries working in essential jobs during the coronavirus pandemic,” The Hill noted further.
While President Trump has offered to work with Democrats to ‘fix’ the issue legislatively, they have rejected his attempts and instead have decided to politicize the issue.
And so, if the high court rules in favor of President Trump, as it should, DACA recipients will likely blame him — but in reality, they should be blaming Democrats who have opted to leave them hanging for years for political gain.
