Tucker Carlson calls out the ‘science’ behind coronavirus lockdowns: ‘This is insanity’

As some states begin to loosen their coronavirus shutdowns, allowing their businesses to reopen much to the chagrin of the perpetually outraged Left, some in the media are finally beginning to question what led to the shutdowns in the first place.

By now, most Americans understand they were implemented by governors to “flatten the curve” — that is, slow the spread — of COVID-19.

But what if the “science” and data that persuaded these state leaders to shutter their economies and cause the furlough of tens of millions of workers were wrong?

Fox News host Tucker Carlson addressed that very issue during his Wednesday evening program.

As reported by The Daily Caller, after noting that many Americans are now experiencing the double whammy loss of jobs and basic liberties, the host said they’d “better not complain about it” or they’ll be censored and, in some cases, even arrested.

“What country is this?” Carlson asked. “It’s a country in a lockdown. We’re told we have no choice but to do this — to stop our lives completely,” even though the “science” behind the lockdowns has yet to be proven.”

“Mass quarantines, they tell us again and again, are the only way to save lives,” Carlson said. “But that’s a lie. They don’t know it’s true, despite what they’ve claimed. There’s no scientific record to consult. It’s never been done.

“We’re currently living through the largest and most expensive experiment ever conducted in human history. We’ve spent trillions of dollars, and crushed millions of people, purely on the guess that a nationwide lockdown would save us from the coronavirus. Has it worked? Was the guess correct?” he continued.

Carlson noted that in looking at the “data,” eight states have not issued stay-at-home orders and yet they are still “below the national average in coronavirus cases and deaths, per capita.”

Referring to “journalist and professor Wilfred Reilly,” Carlson said he “did the math” in comparing per capita figures on a state-by-state basis. Reilly found that “a state’s lockdown strategy had virtually no effect on how severe its outbreak of the Wuhan coronavirus was,” said the host.

That makes perfect sense when you think about it. As conservative radio talk show host Mark Levin noted on his Wednesday evening program, while coronavirus lockdowns have driven unemployment levels to near 20 percent, that leaves 80 percent of Americans still working. And while a sizable number of us are working from home, tens of millions are not; they are truckers, supermarket clerks, delivery drivers, postal carriers, and so forth. And yet, they are ‘somehow’ surviving the pandemic.

“Are you surprised by this?” Carlson asked. “Maybe you shouldn’t be. You can see the same trend at work in other countries.

“Sweden, most famously, has never locked down. Restaurants there have never closed. That country is still suffering from coronavirus, suffering more, in fact, than we are in the U.S. But the country’s epidemic appears to have peaked. And without locking down, Sweden has, and this is the key, has fared far better than other European countries that did lockdown. That includes Britain, Italy, Spain, and Belgium,” he said.

“How can this be true?” he asked rhetorically. “It seems to contravene everything we hear all day long. ‘Lockdowns stop the virus.’ That’s what they tell us, almost always at high volume and with maximum outrage and self-righteousness daring us to disagree. But in fact, there’s not much evidence that it’s true.”

Carlson cited a USC study that found that “as of early April, up to 5.6 percent of the entire county had contracted the illness.”

“Up to 320,000 adults in Los Angeles apparently had already had it,” he said. “At the time, the official number of infected people was about 8,000 people. City officials had no clue. They weren’t even close. The virus had spread throughout a huge population right in the middle of the most restrictive quarantine in American history. What does that tell you? It tells you the lockdown didn’t work,” he said.

Other experts have shared findings in their research that do not comport with the shutdown strategy that has been recommended by administration health officials like Drs. Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx.

In an interview with Levin for his Fox News program, Dr. David Katz, the founding director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center in Connecticut, warned that the social distancing guidelines and mandates may be helping to contain the virus, but they are also preventing the development of the “herd immunity” necessary to allow the public to resume their lives while a vaccine is in development.

“That’s what will happen if you lock everybody away from everybody else and kind of wait until things get better and then let everybody out into the world,” Katz said on Sunday. “The virus is still out there. We don’t have antibodies. We’ll just get it later.”

Carlson said that state officials continue to ignore any evidence that runs counter to their policies.

“They don’t want to know what the facts are,” he said. “Indeed, some are now promising even longer lockdowns, maybe through the end of the summer, and even tougher punishments for those who flout them.

“This is insanity,” he concluded. “It is definitely not science.”
