Chris Cuomo’s ‘reemergence’ from basement moment crushed by backlash: ‘Was this before the Hamptons?’

Well, there’s a reason why President Donald Trump frequently refers to CNN as the “fake news” network.

In what feels like an uncomfortable, “scripted” moment, CNN’s anchor Chris Cuomo was filmed as he “emerged from his basement, where he’s been riding out the coronavirus for the last several weeks,” as a tweet from his show’s account described the moment.

Cuomo said he was cleared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Here it is. The official reentry from the basement, cleared by CDC,” he told viewers. “A little sweaty, just worked out. It happens.”

“This is what I’ve been dreaming of, literally for weeks,” Cuomo added.

He would then greet his family, who were awaiting his entry into the room.

“My wife, she was cleared by the CDC. She doesn’t have a fever, she doesn’t have the symptoms anymore, more than seven days from her quarantine,” he said, after faking a cough on her. “We’re still a little scared, so I’ll just give you one of these.”

The CNN anchor then wags his index and pinkie fingers at his wife and children.

“Just give you one of these, just give you one of these,” he said to each of his children.

Cuomo was reportedly recovering at home after being diagnosed with COVID-19 back in March, and his reemergence made for a dramatic moment on television, but there’s one small problem here.

While he was supposed to be in quarantine, Cuomo was spotted playing outside with his wife and three children.

Last Monday, Cuomo got into an altercation with a bicyclist Easter Sunday while at his East Hampton property on Easter Sunday. The property is still being developed, and is reportedly a 30 minute drive from his home.

“Your brother is the coronavirus czar, and you’re not even following his rules!” the man told Cuomo.

The whole coronavirus victim thing suddenly takes on a whole “staged” appearance, not that CNN would ever manipulate reality to orchestrate a ratings-driven moment.

Right?

Of all the reaction to the story, Stephen L. Miller may have offered the best response when he asked: “How is this not a colossal Milli Vanilli like scandal for CNN?”

Here’s a sampling of other reactions from Twitter:
