Mass shooting spree in gun-controlled Canada leaves 17 dead, including mountie

Canadian authorities say that 16 people were shot and killed late Saturday night and into Sunday in Nova Scotia, including RCMP officer Heidi Stevenson, a mother of two.

The shooter, identified as 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, was finally stopped by officers after a 30-mile long, 12-hour rampage. In his wake, the lunatic left multiple crime scenes, resulting in Canada’s deadliest shooting spree in the country’s history.

Canada’s strict gun-control laws apparently left citizens at the mercy of the shooter as he made his way through several small Nova Scotia communities, from Portapique to Enfield.

During at least part of the shooting spree, the killer wore a police uniform and drove a vehicle that was made to resemble a police cruiser. In addition to the officer who lost her life, another RCMP officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds after confronting the man.

A spokesman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Nova Scotia, Lee Bergerman, issued a statement Sunday evening that read in part: “What has unfolded overnight and into this morning is incomprehensible and many families are experiencing the loss of a loved one.

“That includes our own RCMP family. It is with tremendous sadness that I share with you that we lost Cst. Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year veteran of the Force who was killed this morning, while responding to an active shooter incident. Heidi answered the call of duty and lost her life while protecting those she served.”

“The impact of this incident will extend from one end of the province to the other,” he added.

“Our hearts are heavy with grief and sadness today as we have lost one of our own,” Brian Sauve, president of the union representing RCMP officers, told the CBC.

The CBC reported that RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki confirmed the death toll stood at 16 as of Sunday evening. The shooter’s death is in addition to that number.

RCMP Chief Supt. Chris Leather had earlier told reporters, “in excess of 10 people had been killed.” He indicated that it was hard to specify the exact number of victims, “because as we’re standing here, the investigation continues into areas that we have not yet explored across the province.” He added that the killings seem to be, “at least in part, very random in nature.”

Multiple news reports indicate that there was at least one shootout with police before the end of the chase and that several fires were set along the highway that appeared to be police vehicles.

Lucki offered her opinion that Wortman had an initial “motivation” that “turned to randomness.”

“Our investigation will tell that. We don’t know for sure, and we’re going to have to do a lot of work on finding the motivation — a lot of background, a lot of profiling-type events and a lot of crime scene processing,” she said.

The suspect, whose occupation was listed as a denturist and a resident of Dartmouth, near Halifax, was confronted by multiple RCMP officers at a gas station in Shubenacadie, north of Enfield, “resulting in officers discharging their firearms,” according to a police statement. Witnesses reported seeing several police vehicles at the scene, hearing several gunshots, and eventually seeing a body on the ground.

“There was multiple, like probably between five or 10 [gunshots]. It was steady,” said nearby resident Deon Wells, according to CTV News.

Leather stopped short of confirming that Wortman was shot by police, but he admitted, “officers were involved in terminating the threat.”

Canadian gun control laws are even more restrictive than California’s and New York’s draconian anti-Second Amendment controls. Yet, never slow to take advantage of an opportunity to further their cause, gun controllers have already issued calls on social media for still more illogical laws to deprive citizens of their ability to defend themselves …
