Texas Gov. Greg Abbott discussed reopening his state Sunday during an online church service from Dallas, stressing that he wants to lead the nation in “returning to our lives and our livelihoods,” as the governor previously characterized the process.
That the Republican did so by putting his faith in God, and praised God’s hand for the gains that have been made so far in the fight against COVID-19 is sure to draw the ire of many on the left.
In an interview with Prestonwood Baptist Church Pastor Jack Graham, Abbott talked about opening businesses and churches, noting the importance of Texans getting back to work and earning paychecks.
The governor spoke about becoming a paraplegic when he was 26 years old and how it was a test of faith, comparing it to what the country is now going through.
“The growth of the coronavirus in Texas is slowing by people staying at home, by people reducing interaction with others,” he said. “God’s hand is working through the scientists across this great nation by coming out with fast, innovative drugs that will lead to therapeutic remedies.”
“Put your faith in God,” Abbott told fellow Texans. “God will bring you through this and Texas will once again rise up to be the number one economy in the United States of America.”
Abbott appeared on Fox News over the weekend, and said he understands there may be an increase in the spread of the coronavirus as the state slowly opens up, but laid out a strategy to “identify and contain” potential outbreaks.
As for comparisons to states such as New York reopening, Abbott explained that “the situation happening in New York is far different than what is happening in Texas and other places.”
“For example, there will be unfortunately more people who pass away in one day in New York than we will have in Texas in the entirety of this whole pandemic situation and as the president made clear, there are different strategies for different states,” he said.
In noting that “all the prognostications about the potential dire situation in Texas didn’t even come close to being true,” the governor said the situation “is far more contained in Texas than they are in other states.”
Which is not to say that Texas is not prepared for the worse as they “slowly” begin to restart their economy — the 10th largest in the world.
“With regard to our ability to contain this going forward, we have the tools and strategies to make sure that we will be able to contain it as it begins to grow, which we know that it will,” Abbott said. “And with our medical doctors and with the resources that we have, and with the hospital availability that we have, we know that we will be able to contain this as we slowly, in baby steps, begin to open up our economy.”
