The barely-there New York Daily News is complaining that Republicans made”immigrants” ineligible for stimulus checks in the COVID-19 federal relief package passed by Congress and signed by President Trump, but author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza is setting the record straight.

The lurid front page of the failing liberal tabloid with a dwindling circulation splashed a misleading front-page headline that reads “No Checks For You!” and claims in the CARES Act, GOP lawmakers bear responsibility for denying federal cash to about 200,00 New Yorkers, most of whom are immigrants.

The financially strapped Daily News has been hit by a series of downsizings and staff turnover and is apparently on its last legs. In July 2018, it cut loose 50 percent of its newsroom staff. Its current owner bought the paper in September 2017 for just $1.

While bemoaning the alleged hardships in the legislation, the text of the Daily News article, however, actually reveals that the contention revolves around illegal aliens rather than legal immigrants. “The $2.2 trillion economic stimulus bill signed into law last month contains GOP-crafted language that makes people who use Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) ineligible for the $1,200 personal checks that the Treasury Department will begin issuing to most workers this week. ITINs are mostly used by undocumented immigrants who can’t get Social Security numbers but still pay taxes — and in New York alone, there are 197,187 such filers, according to the data reviewed by the Daily News.”

Dinesh D’Souza, an immigrant from India, took to Twitter to call out the Daily News for its inaccurate and perhaps click-bait headline:  “The term ‘immigrants’ here is used for illegals, who of course are not immigrants. Contrary to the implication of this #FakeNews article, it’s a good thing that we’re not encouraging lawbreakers by sending them checks in the mail.”

The open-borders-loving mainstream media has a history of conflating legal and illegal immigration to muddy the waters and stoke resentment, divisiveness, and confusion.

While illegal immigrants may pay taxes, there is also increased stress on social services, schools, and healthcare, among other things, as well as driving down the pay of American employees and job seekers.

In addition to the $1200 check, most eligible taxpayers will qualify for $500 for each dependent child. The legislation also attempts to provide financial help to small businesses which have been devastated by COVID-19 shutdown orders.

According to a 2018 CNSNews report, the ITIN program is riddled with fraud and abuse. In a six-year period, the IRS allegedly detected more than one million cases of identity theft perpetrated by illegal aliens who obtained an ITIN from the federal tax-collecting agency. It is unclear if anyone was ever prosecuted. A 2012 report from NumbersUSA claimed that IRS managers even told staff to “look the other way” when handling sketchy ITIN applications.
