Wallace pushes for Surgeon General to endorse federal stay-at-home mandate; Adams pushes right back

Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace joined ranks with those who have long condemned President Donald Trump as a tyrant and now criticize him for not being more tyrannical in locking down the country amid the Wuhan virus pandemic.

With civil liberties in America disappearing faster than toilet paper, the totalitarian left is complaining because Trump has not issued a national stay-at-home order, and Wallace asked U.S. Surgeon General Vice Admiral Jerome Adams about this Sunday morning — in the process, he pits the experts on the White House task force against the president.

“The Coronavirus is not a state issue, it doesn’t follow or respect state borders. Dr. Fauci says he believes there should be a national stay-at-home order. Is he wrong?” Wallace asked.

(Wallace first played a clip of Trump deferring to state governors to issue the order, before noting that nine states still have not done so.)

“It’s important to understand that most people across the country are doing the right thing,” Adams said, displaying a more positive disposition than Wallace. “Over 90% of the country is staying at home and a good proportion, more than average, is staying home even in those nine states.”

The surgeon general explained to the Fox News host “we live in a country where we have a system of federalism,” pointing out that states have different laws in response to dealing with a crisis, using the opioid crisis and smoking as examples.

“More people will die even in the worst projections from cigarette smoking in this country than are going to die from coronavirus this year,” Adams noted.

Pointing to federal guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19, Adams said: “these are essentially our national stay-at-home order.”

“One more important point,” he stressed, “the nine states that haven’t yet done shelter in place orders are states that actually produce a large amount of our food. So they’re struggling with issues concerning how they can provide for the rest of the country to be able to stay at home.”

Wallace continued with his game of “gotcha” to score points against the president.

“There’s a big difference between opioids and cigarettes, which are something that people decide to use or not to use, and the coronavirus, which people catch,” he said. “It’s not an individual choice. And you know, when President Trump says that he is a wartime president, during World War II, FDR didn’t say, ‘Well, it’s up to each state to decide what to do.’ He mobilized the nation.

“Again, why not a national stay-at-home order?” Wallace pressed. “The coronavirus doesn’t recognize states’ rights, so does the federal analogy really work here?”

Adams held up the reaction last week from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to the idea of a federal quarantine of his state as an example, when Cuomo likened that possibility to “a federal declaration of war on states.”

“The governors are intensely protective of their right,” he said. “And rightly so, to be able to decide what’s best for their states and we are going to do everything we can as scientists, as physicians, and as medical professionals to help them understand what we think the right thing is for them to do.”

Again he urged everyone in the country to stay at home.

“At least give us a week or two if you can. We want you to do it for 30 days but even those nine states, give us what you can so we can get this peak to start to come down on the other side,” Adams said.
