Balcony sing-alongs and other funky things Americans are doing to stay entertained on lockdown

Some members of the public have been coping with their respective public officials’ authoritarian shutdown and lockdown decrees by hosting veritable block parties.

This has reportedly been especially popular in Boston, Massachusetts.

“A pair of roommates was inspired by videos of Italians singing on their balconies,” station KETK reported. “They picked the Boston classic ‘Sweet Caroline’ and videoed as neighbors joined in from below their windows and across the street.”

“The duo has used social media to ask for song requests and now hold nightly sessions at 7 p.m. They ask all Bostonians to take to their windows, turn up their speakers, and sing to each other in harmony.”

The trend reportedly began in Italy, which was the first Western nation to be locked down because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

“Italy is on complete lockdown, with 17,660 cases of the coronavirus,” Quartz reported on March 14. “But people in the country have started coming out on their balconies and leaning out their windows to join together in song, coordinating the effort by spreading the word via social media.”

“On Friday, Italians sang the national anthem together at 6pm; on Saturday, they joined together to applaud health-care workers.”

There was just one catch. They were singing the Chinese national anthem to thank China for its aid, never mind the fact that China itself is responsible for the pandemic.

Nevertheless, the Italians inadvertently managed to start a trend that’s gone global, from Germany all the way to Boston and beyond.

But singing isn’t all that people have been doing. Bored out of their minds, a remarkable number of people have taken to coming up with creative, hilarious sketches.

Funny and cheery as this all might be, the problem remains that no lawmakers have prepared a plan for how to actually end these shutdowns and lockdowns, thus suggesting they could effectively run in perpetuity.

In America alone, these shutdowns and lockdowns are estimated to cost an unprecedented amount of damage to the economy in shuttered businesses, laid-off employees, crumbling industries and suffering families.

“The American economy is closing down rapidly from both voluntary and mandatory business closings. It is not just restaurants, but also manufacturing, construction, recreation, travel, and many other industries that are shuttering operations,” the Cato Institute notes.

“If this continues, there will be a massive plunge in incomes, and tens of millions of people will not be able to meet basic expenses such as rent and food.”

And, well, there’s nothing funny about that.
