Racist? Trudeau mulls border crackdown, travel restrictions while he and wife self-quarantine

The problem with the media jumping to criticize President Donald Trump on his response to the coronavirus outbreak is that when other leaders follow his lead, it leaves them with quite the conundrum.

Two days after Trump announced he would ban travel from Europe, resulting in the liberal media calling him a xenophobe and a racist, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said citizens there will be warned against international travel and that his government is currently looking at closing the border, according to Microsoft News.

“We’re in the midst of looking at this,” he said Friday in an interview with Radio-Canada’s Montreal morning show.

“We’re in the midst of evaluating day-to-day what to do,” added Trudeau, who spoke with President Trump on Thursday, according to reports.

Should Trump utter such an ambiguous remark, the hair-on-fire U.S. media would go into a frenzy about how unprepared he was to an outbreak that’s less than eight weeks old.

“We’re in the midst of coordinating with the Americans, obviously, on our borders, on our actions,” Trudeau explained. “We’ll continue to evaluate what we can do and how we can keep Canadians in security and we won’t close the door on any idea.”

CBS News reported that the emphasis would be on “overseas” airports.

“We are looking to reduce the number of airports that will accept travellers from overseas in order to be able give the proper resources on all arrivals to ensure we’re doing everything we can to keep Canadians and Canada safe,” Trudeau said.

“We’re also, obviously, looking at countries of origin and further measures we can take,” he continued. “We will make those decisions based on the best science, the best recommendations of our health officials.”

Trudeau is in self-isolation at home after his wife, Sophie, who tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday after returning from a speaking engagement in the United Kingdom and experiencing mild, flu-like symptoms.

He will reportedly not be tested for coronavirus because he’s not showing symptoms.

The prime minister is expected to address the nation Friday on the virus outbreak.

News of the border considerations prompted sarcastic responses from social media users.

“Justin Trudeau just became a Trump Republican! He’s considering closing the border to stop the spread of Coronavirus,” one tweet read. “All of a sudden Trump’s immigration platform is wise and not racist. How convenient. I will be accepting apologies from Liberals all day. Thank you!”
