Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced on Wednesday to 23 years in prison after being found guilty of raping a woman in 2013, and forcing oral sex on another in 2006.

Judge James Burke announced the sentence after the two women – a once-aspiring actress and a former TV and film production assistant – spoke about the crimes and trauma they were forced to endure as the result of Weinstein’s actions.

His lawyers are claiming that the nearly 68-year-old man will surely spend the rest of his life in prison serving such a lengthy sentence. They argued for the mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years, and AP noted that Weinstein has a laundry list of medical issues including “back problems from a car crash last summer, has a condition that requires shots in his eyes and last week had a stent placed to unblock an artery.”

Now that he has been sentenced his lawyers are planning to move forward with an appeal, but Weinstein may not want to count his chickens before they’ve hatched.

He has also been charged in California with the alleged Feb. 18, 2013 rape of a woman after forcing his way into her apartment, as well as the sexual assault of a woman at the Beverly Hills hotel the following night. At the time the charges were announced, Weinstein’s lawyers wondered whether the timing was meant to influence the jury selection process for the trial in New York. They angled for a “cooling off” period before selection, but were denied but Judge Burke.

If found guilty in the state of California, Weinstein could be looking at up to another 28 years in prison for “forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by use of force and sexual battery.”

Twitter predictably celebrated the news of the convicted predator’s sentencing:

Three additional cases of alleged sexual assault are under review in California by the Los Angeles Police Department, and while there are no details currently available regarding those instances, it’s possible that if found guilty, Weinstein could be facing even more time in prison on top of the 23 years he was sentenced to on Wednesday.
