California Governor Gavin Newsom shocked many when he had nothing but kind words for Trump and his administration during a press conference on the White House’s handling of the coronavirus and cruise ships.
During a presser on Tuesday, a reporter asked, “Over the past couple of days President Trump has said that he would prefer if none of the passengers aboard these cruises, landed on US soils. Did he mention that to you in your conversation?”
California Gov. Newsom had kind words for Pres. Trump and Vice Pres. Pence when asked about the administration's handling of coronavirus and cruise ships:

“Yeah, we had a private conversation, but he said ‘We’re gonna do the right thing,’ and ‘ you have my support, all of our support, logistically and otherwise,” Newsom responded.
“President Trump said everything that I could have hoped for, and we had a very long conversation and every single thing that he said, they followed through on.”
“Every single thing his administration said, and it starts at the top, including the vice president, has been consistent with the expectation that we’d repatriate these passengers and we’d do it in a way that does justice to the spirit that defines the best of our country and the state of California.” The governor continued.
President Trump and Gov. Newsom have long been at odds and have exchanged ugly public remarks against each other over California’s sanctuary policies and homeless crises.
In late February, Newsom vowed to vile legal action to halt the Trump administration’s plan to divert water supplies in order to help California farmers.
“California won’t allow the Trump Administration to destroy and deplete our natural resources,” the state’s Democratic Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement following Trump’s speech at a rally in Bakersfield, in February.
For now, that seems to be put on a temporary backburner as both federal and state officials grapple with the best course against the spread of coronavirus.
Many social media users were surprised by the civility between Newsom and the Trump administration, although some suspected Newsom was angling for fed dollars with his flattering tone.
Here is a sampling of the shocked responses from Twitter:
How refreshing to think people can actually work together on difficult problems without playing Gotcha political games. @GavinNewsom @realDonaldTrump If only the press would do the same…. I’m looking at you, @ABCPolitics @NBCNews @msnbc @washingtonpost @nytimes

I’m kinda shell/shocked. The story here is not coronavirus or the ship. The story is ABC running a positive statement about Trump. I literally cannot remember a single positive mention about Trump in 5 years on ABC. This seems unprecedented.

Liberal heads right now… pic.twitter.com/gg2QGWL0rB

Newsom didn’t take the press’ liberal bait. Give him credit. He knows when to just shut up and do what’s needed. He won’t use the corona virus for political points against Trump. Very unexpected.

I’m surprised by Newsome’s civility. Grateful for it. And sad that the civility of the situation is so rare (or rarely reported) it’s newsworthy.

If and when the President does the right thing it really doesn’t matter. It’s on Newsom at that point. You can never go wrong by doing the right thing

I’m shocked and happy about this.
