Desperate democrats could be seeing Hillary Clinton as ‘Trump-slayer’

With the 2020 Democratic primary now a two-man race between Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders, and the former vice president being billed as the clear front-runner, there’s an argument to be made that Democrats are feeling a bit uneasy.

So much so that the need for a “Trump-slayer” still exists, and some see the woman who was slain by President Donald Trump as the person for that job.

Yes, we are talking about Hillary Clinton.

New York Post columnist Michael Goodwin said that while many in the party seem to be breathing a sigh of relief with Biden being ahead of the self-avowed socialist, he is skeptical.

“Instead of a smooth ride,” he wrote, “it’s more likely that the Dems’ desperate search for a Trump slayer will hit more turbulence and an alternative to Biden still could be necessary.”

Goodwin reminds readers that prior to South Carolina, Biden was all but finished and the political obituaries were already written. In winning the state, he rode a wave of momentum into Super Tuesday, but Goodwin pointed out that there was a circling of wagons around Biden out of fear of a Sanders nomination.

Now a two-man race, the problem for Democrats is the two candidates left standing are not just white men, but old, straight white men. At the age of 77, Biden is one year younger than Sanders, but there are plenty of concerns about whether he will make it to the convention given all the questions about his mental competence.

Sanders appears healthy, but he had a heart attack in October and has been reluctant to share a comprehensive report on his health.

Citing Biden’s cognitive issues, the columnist makes it clear the candidate “is capable of blowing his chances all by himself.”

“Put it this way: Which Joe Biden will we see from now on? Does the new, improved version have the stamina and mental health to go all the way? Or will the long summer and the attacks from Trump on him and his family break him?” Goodwin wrote.

He also said it was noteworthy that wife Jill Biden seems to be by his side more often now, presenting the image “of a nurse or mediator between him and the world.”

All of which suggests that the party’s July convention could be one for the ages, and Goodwin makes the case for why Clinton is the best backup plan.

“She’s hardly my cup of tea but for all her problems, including doubts about her physical stamina, she is a fundraising machine, has a true following and could hit the ground running,” Goodwin said.

“And, in case you hadn’t noticed, she’s advertising her availability,” he added.

Clinton was back in the media last week with Hulu premiering its Hillary Clinton docu-series, and Goodwin noted the timing of Clinton using the media spots to “stick knives into Trump and Sanders.”

“All the party has to do is call. Her bag is packed,” Goodwin concludes.

Conservative actor James Woods had a pretty wild take on events, in light of all the concerns about Biden’s state of mind.

Woods tweeted that Biden will select Clinton as his vice-presidential choice, only to “gracefully resign as his dementia worsens and… Voila! #MadamePresident at last!”

Brad Blakeman, a former adviser to President George W. Bush, suggested last month in an appearance on Fox Business that Clinton is rooting for a brokered convention.

“The more chaos that’s created, the better it is for the Clintons. She is itching to get involved. The question is what path does she have,” he said. “It would be a brokered convention. She wants to be a player. She’s not content on the sidelines.”

Clinton commented on the 2020 Democratic primary in a CNN interview that aired Sunday.

“I will support the nominee of the Democratic Party,” Clinton said, though she was hesitant to say that she would campaign for Sanders.

“I don’t know if he would ask me to campaign for him, because I have no idea what he is thinking about for a general election campaign,” she said. “As I’ve said many times, I do not think he’s our strongest nominee against Donald Trump.”
