Biden celebrates big win in SC by slamming socialist rival, but signs of life don’t equal momentum

With an impressive win Saturday in South Carolina, former Vice President Joe Biden was feeling as cocky as Corn Pop the gang leader, and he used the occasion to hit the Democratic Party’s front-runner, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and his socialist revolution.

Sharing the stage with Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., the most senior black member of the House, whose endorsement gave Biden a big advantage, the candidate let it be known that the self-avowed democratic socialist was making promises he cannot deliver on.

“Folks, win big or lose, that’s the choice,” Biden said. “Most Americans don’t want the promise of revolution. They want more than promises. They want results.”

“Talk is cheap. False promises are deceptive,” he added. “And talk about revolution and change in anyone’s life, we need real changes right now.”

Selling himself as the underdog in his victory speech — America loves an underdog — Biden declared that “we are very much alive.”

“All of you who have been knocked down, counted out, left behind — this is your campaign,” he told cheering supporters. “Just days ago, the press and the pundits had declared this candidacy dead. Now, thanks to all of you, the heart of the Democratic Party, we’ve just won and we’ve won big because of you. And we are very much alive.”

While Biden did his best to imply that he had momentum on his side after Saturday’s win, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel had other ideas.

“After more than three decades of trying, Joe Biden finally won a presidential primary state, but this win does not equal momentum,” McDaniel said in a statement. “Today’s result all but guarantees that this primary process isn’t ending anytime soon. President Trump will beat whichever socialist the Democrats — eventually — nominate this November.”

Of course, Biden was expected to win South Carolina, carrying a large percentage of the African-American vote, and he repeatedly dropped Barack Obama’s name during his speech.

“You launched Bill Clinton, Barack Obama to the presidency, now you launched our candidacy on the path to defeating Donald Trump,” he said. “This campaign has taken off, so join us.”

Winning 48.4% of the vote, Biden had some reason to feel rejuvenated. Sanders came in a distant second with 19.9%. Both former South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Elizabeth Warren failed to get out of single digits, garnering 8.2% and 7.1% of the vote respectively.

Biden had a special message for Democrats voting on Super Tuesday, saying it’s time to choose which path they will follow.

“This is the moment to choose the path forward for our party — this is the moment and it’s arrived,” the candidate proclaimed. “The decisions Democrats make in the next few days will determine what this party stands for, what we believe and what we’ll get done.”

“If Democrats nominate me, I believe we can beat Donald Trump, keep Nancy Pelosi in the House of Representatives as speaker and take back the United States Senate,” Biden said.

He then took a veiled shot at both Sanders, an independent, and Mike Bloomberg, a former independent and Republican.

“And if the Democrats want a nominee who’s a Democrat. A lifelong Democrat. A proud Democrat. An Obama-Biden Democrat, then join us. We have the option of winning big or losing big, that’s the choice,” Biden told those looking on.

As for Sanders, it seems the candidate has his eyes set on Super Tuesday, offering Biden his congratulations and looking ahead to Tuesday, when 14 states hold their presidential primaries.

“I want to congratulate Joe Biden on his victory tonight. I believe very strongly that the people of this country—on Super Tuesday and after—will support us because we are more than a campaign. We are a movement,” he tweeted.

Billionaire Tom Steyer bowed out Saturday night after drawing just over 11% of the vote, and President Donald Trump took to Twitter to suggest that Bloomberg should end his “joke of a campaign.”

The president tweeted: “Sleepy Joe Biden’s victory in the South Carolina Democrat Primary should be the end of Mini Mike Bloomberg’s Joke of a campaign. After the worst debate performance in the history of presidential debates, Mini Mike now has Biden split up his very few voters, taking many away!”
