Riding a wave of momentum after the Iowa and Nevada caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, Socialist Bernie Sanders is seemingly in firm control of the process that will culminate in securing the Democrats’ 2020 presidential nomination. However, according to progressive MSNBC host Chris Matthews, such a development has the party establishment questioning whether they would rather support President Trump than hand over the reins of their apparat to a bona fide radical leftist who embraces communism.

A blowout win by Sanders in Nevada on Saturday is forcing the issue to the fore and Matthews, an outspoken Sanders critic, is baring the ongoing agony behind the curtain to public scrutiny.

During a panel discussion televised while yesterday’s caucuses were taking place, Matthews offered: “I’m wondering if the Democratic moderates want Bernie Sanders to be President? I mean, that’s maybe too exciting a question to raise–they don’t like Trump at all. Do they want Bernie Sanders to take over the Democratic Party in perpetuity?”

“I mean, he takes it over, he sets the direction of the future of the party,” he continued. “Maybe they’d rather wait four years and put in the Democrat that they like.”

Adrienne Elrod, a former adviser to Hillary Clinton, agreed that it is an issue and that it could even result in losing the House of Representatives. “That’s the big question, right?” Elrod said. “There are people that are concerned–strategists that are concerned–that Bernie Sanders being at the top of the ticket will force us to lose the House. I don’t necessarily think that’s the case.”

Matthews went on to ask, “How about losing the future?”

Elrod evaded by replying, “It’s early.”

Some MSNBC observers are interpreting the network’s and Matthews’ opposition to Sanders’ extreme-left commitment to socialism as a foreshadowing of a move to support Trump and other Republicans in this year’s elections.

Later, after the Nevada results came in depicting Sanders’ decisive victory, Matthews went so far as to compare that win to the Third Reich’s invasion of France during World War II, when the Nazis easily overcame the Maginot Line which was thought to be part of an impenetrable line of defenses.

Further reflecting the growing divide in the Democrat Party, Sanders supporters are voicing their anger about Matthews and MSNBC for what they see as a “Never Sanders” campaign by the network.

Democrat political consultant James Carville also appeared on MSNBC on Saturday. Carville has repeatedly expressed his disgust with the Sanders campaign, recently calling the Vermont senator a communist.  Yesterday, Carville insisted that the big winner coming out of Nevada is Vladimir Putin.

The angry divisiveness tearing the left apart extends right down to the grassroots level. MSNBC is increasingly a focal point for the growing level of bitterness within the party as some look for a scapegoat …
