Jesse Watters has Ron Paul grade Trump’s first term, is stunned by how low he went

Fox News host Jesse Watters featured Ron Paul on this week’s episode of “Watters’ World,” and for some reason had the former congressman grade President Donald Trump’s first term in office.

To those who recall, the libertarian politician wasn’t exactly a ray of sunshine when offering his take on events, and being that Paul failed rather spectacularly in his own presidential bids, which practically became a quadrennial passage, it’s fair to say he was a peculiar choice to evaluate Trump’s performance.

As might be expected, Paul has not been impressed with the president, particularly on his efforts to fight rampant illegal immigration.

“Depends on what day of the week it is. It’s up and down. He doesn’t get an A-plus from me. I don’t like walls and fences and things like that,” Paul said. “But actually, immigration is down — I don’t know whether that’s because of Trump or whether he has helped do that. Illegal immigration is down. So he gets a low C.”

The harsh assessment seemed to catch Watters off guard, but Paul was just getting started in his criticism of the president.

As he is wont to do, Paul did take advantage of the opportunity to espouse his own views.

“I don’t think he’s completely failed,” he continued, “because he does talk a little bit about my theory about what we do, ‘If you don’t subsidize something it will help. If you subsidize something you get more of it.’ The subsidies for illegally entering this country is the main motivating factor for us to have our problem.”

Explaining that he “would maybe give him a B-plus,” Watters would then turn to the booming Trump economy, asking Paul for a grade there.

Paul was stingy with his praise there also, saying he “partially” endorses Trump’s efforts to lower taxes and regulations, but then said the president is a “long way from what Austrian economics teaches what free markets is all about.”

“You want interest rates designed by the marketplace, not by putting pressure on the Federal Reserve saying ‘Get those rates down!’” Paul opined.

“Zero rate interest rates is the craziest thing ever. It’s not going to work,” he said. “The biggest problem with that overall is what a lot of people are admitting now. It creates a lot of debt. It’s huge. Just this week, $14 trillion. This is unsustainable.”

Pushing for an actual grade and getting another C-, Watters replied, “You are a tough grader!”

“Wow,” the Fox News host added. “I’d like to see your grades for Barack Obama.”

Next in line was foreign policy, where Watters was certain Paul would appreciate the president’s efforts.

“He’s probably someone that’s right up your alley,” Watters said of Trump. “He’s not starting a lot of new wars. He wants to get out of the Middle East. Clearly, you have to give him better than a C-minus, Congressman Paul.”

While Trump has done better than most politicians in keeping campaign promises, Paul cited inconsistencies here.

“I think we’re in the same category. Let me give that some thought,” he said. “No, if we go by what he says, what he said, what he says in the campaign. He deserves a B-plus. ‘I’m coming home, I’m stopping these wars.’ Take, Syria, for instance, he said that ‘What we need to do is come home.’ He makes that announcement and the next day he sends more troops over there. It’s still a mess.”

“Well, there’s always the second term,” Watters would interject. “And that’s almost a guarantee.”

“Too much intervention for me,” Paul countered.

When pressed for a letter grade on foreign policy, he awarded another C-minus.

“OK,” Watters said, with a laugh. “C-minuses across the board.”

Paul continued to ramble on about how we are doing the “same ol’ thing” as Watters rushed him off, playfully calling his guest “professor” as he closed the segment.
