The 2020 Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday had no official hosts, but got rolling with a pair of comedic giants–Steve Martin and Chris Rock–who teed off on the Iowa Democrat caucuses, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, and the lack of diversity reflected in the year’s Oscar nominees.

“A couple of years ago, there was a big disaster where they accidentally read out the wrong name, but they have guaranteed this will not happen this year, because the Academy has switched to the new Iowa Caucus app,” said Martin, in reference to the epic failure and inability of Iowa Democrats to count their caucus votes.

Finding Amazon Jeff Bezos in the audience, the pair had a couple of zingers ready for him. “He’s got cash. When he writes a check, the banks bounce,” quipped Rock. “Jeff Bezos is so rich, he got divorced and he’s still the richest man in the world,” he added.

Prior to the ceremony, a number of people had taken umbrage at the fact that women and minorities were underrepresented in the lists of award nominees. Rock and Martin closed their intro by mocking “the amazing progress” made since 1929’s first Oscars ceremony when there were no black nominees, to “now, in 2020, we got one!”

Gervais Weighed In

Ricky Gervais, the comedian and host of the 2020 Golden Globes was not at the diamond-studded affair in Hollywood but he managed to push the stars’ buttons nonetheless, zeroing in on the hypocrisy of the rich and powerful in attendance.

Before the program even began, he tweeted out

He also took aim at the glitterati’s famous, collective penchant for sexual perversions, echoing the shots he had taken in his Globes performance when he faulted celebrities for their connections to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and Harvey Weinstein …

Brad Pitt Scolds the Senate

Still another noteworthy, soon to be forgotten moment viewers endured during the Oscars came when Brad Pitt offered a pointless dig at the U.S. Senate. He came up on stage to accept his award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”

“They told me I only have 45 seconds up here, which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week,” he said.

The liberal audience relished the opportunity to applaud something anti-Trump.

“I’m thinking maybe Quentin does a movie about it, in the end the adults do the right thing,” Pitt added, referring to director Quentin Tarantino and the Hollywood perspective that the only reality that counts is manufactured in Tinseltown.
