Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh made an emotional announcement Monday that he has been diagnosed with advanced-stage lung cancer.

Calling it the “most difficult day in recent memory,” Limbaugh said he doesn’t like to make the program about him, but the diagnoses has been confirmed by doctors and he felt obligated to his great fan base to share the sad news.

“So, I have to tell you something today that I wish I didn’t have to tell you,” he said. “It’s a struggle for me, because I had to inform my staff earlier today. I can’t help but feel that I’m letting everybody down with. The upshot is that I have been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.”

Here’s part of the audio of the announcement:

Limbaugh said he will continue with the show, but will miss time due to treatment.

“My intention is to come here every day,” he said, adding that he does have a “deeply personal relationship with God”  and has been “working it tremendously.”

He also announced that he will miss the next couple of days, but plans to try to keep things as normal as he can.

“Every day I’m not here, I’ll be missing you and thinking about you,” Limbaugh told his loyal audience, as he closed the show.

Limbaugh, 69, was born in 1951 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and began working as a disc jockey for a hometown radio station at the age of 16 years.

He went on to eventually host the Rush Limbaugh Show, now the most listened to radio show in America, being broadcast on more than 600 radio stations nationwide and reaching an audience of up to 27 million people each week.

Limbaugh, who sometimes calls himself “the all-knowing, all-sensing, all-everything Maha Rushie,” first went on the air on August 1, 1988, with today’s show and has been at it for well over 30 years now.

His website notes that Limbaugh, the “Doctor of Democracy,”  is the “pioneer” of AM radio.

“Limbaugh revolutionized the media and political landscape with his unprecedented combination of serious discussion of political, cultural and social issues along with satirical and biting humor, which parodies previously ‘untouchable’ personalities and topics,” the website states.

President Trump will deliver his State of the Union address Tuesday in the House of Representatives and it remains to be seen if the president will speak on Limbaugh’s announcement.

Trump mentioned at a rally in Miami in early January that Limbaugh just signed a new long-term contract.

“We have great people. Rush just signed another four-year contract,” he said. “He just wants four more years, OK?”

The SOTU speech will follow on the heels of the Iowa caucuses, giving the nation its first snapshot of where the Democratic presidential race stands, and one day before the president is expected to be acquitted in the Senate impeachment trial.

Politico reported that Trump will deliver a “non-impeachment” speech that he will use “as a fresh start for his reelection bid,” citing senior administration officials and White House allies.
