The San Francisco sports media got ahead of itself when it took to asking players on the hometown 49ers team if they would accept an invitation to visit the White House and hang out with President Donald Trump if they won Super Bowl LIV.
Turns out, that’s a conundrum the team will not have to ponder, as the 49ers fell to the Kansas City Chiefs, who mounted a thrilling come-from-behind effort to win the big game 31-20.
One of the players asked by the San Francisco Chronicle about going to the White House, Richard Sherman, a loud, trash-talking cornerback for the 49ers, was leaning hard toward not visiting the Trump White House.
“I haven’t thought about it,” Sherman told the paper. “We’ve got a long way between now and then, but I doubt it.”
Well, doubt no more, because the only place the star player will be visiting is the team facility to clean out his locker — for what it’s worth, the 49ers are not based in the poop stained city they are named after and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., calls home, but in Santa Clara, a suburb of San Jose, located 45 miles south of San Francisco.
After the San Francisco-based Golden State Warriors won the NBA championship in 2017, President Trump would withdraw the team’s invitation to visit the White House when star player Stephen Curry and others balked at the idea of going. The team was not even invited after winning the title in 2018.
Sherman has had a great career and is widely seen as a future Hall of Fame player, but he has no one but himself to blame for not being able to snub the commander in chief, as the player gave up one of the big plays in the game.
With less than four minutes on the clock and his team clinging to a three point lead, Sherman was badly beaten by Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins on a 38-yard catch that would set up the game winning score — Watkins also beat the cornerback for a 19-yard completion just after half time.

As for Kansas City’s go ahead score, a 5-yard touchdown pass to running back Damien Williams, Sherman gave up that play as well.

Seen as one of the best interviews in the NFL, Sherman didn’t have a whole lot to say in the postgame news conference, giving terse answers to questions, repeating again and again that they made too many mistakes in the game.
“We’re still a great defense,” Sherman declared. “Just didn’t execute our game.”
The player took to social media afterwards to thank fans for their support and to say, “I wasn’t good enough tonight and I will fix that.”
Proud of this team! Wasn’t the result we wanted but we battled through. I wasn’t good enough tonight and I will fix that. Thank you for all the support all year.

Of course, when you talk trash it’s critical that you back up your words with actions, otherwise you open yourself to intense ridicule.
On the other hand, plays like the one seen here puts one at the mercy of social media.

Here’s a sampling of the aforementioned mercy, or lack thereof, from Twitter:

Sherm started looking more like UNCLE Sherm towards the end of the game.
