Texas Democrats set out to win control of state, have new strategy to pull it off

Democrats understand that if they control Texas and Florida, they can all but control national elections, which explains why both states are a key priority for the left.

While Florida would be accurately described as a purple state these days, Texas is still seen as a more reliable red state, not that Democrats haven’t been working hard to change this.

Texas Democrats have their eyes set on taking control of the state House in the 2020 election — which would be the first time in nearly 20 years — and they’re unveiling a new strategy they hope will help them accomplish the goal, The Hill reported.

More from The Hill:

The Texas Democratic Party and Texas House Democratic Campaign Committee on Monday released a list of 22 state House seats they will target in November, with the ultimate goal of winning nine of the seats to regain control of the lower chamber.

The plan shows how Democrats in the state are hoping to build on the gains they made during the 2018 midterms.

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) came within 3 percentage points of unseating Sen. Ted Cruz (R) and in the process won nine state districts that are currently represented in the state House by GOP lawmakers. In another 13 state House districts, O’Rourke came within single digits of Cruz.

Democrats also picked up 12 state House seats in 2018, bringing them within striking distance for this election cycle.

A test of their efforts will be seen in a special election Tuesday for a seat in Texas’s 28th district, which includes suburbs of Houston — given that Hillary Clinton won in the area by 7 points and O’Rourke pulled in over 48 percent of the vote, odds are in their favor.

…which may explain the media attention.

“We’re looking forward to the results on Tuesday, great momentum point for us, but the work has already begun for November,” said Manny Garcia, executive director of the Texas Democratic Party.

The Republican State Leadership Committee tweeted that radical left Beto O’Rourke, a star in today’s Democratic Party,  is campaigning for the party in the race, which is a sign of how much importance they are placing on winning.

As seen in recent years in Florida, a focus on registering new voters in the state is an important part of the Democratic Party’s efforts.

Redistricting is another avenue.

As noted by The Hill, state districts in Texas will be redrawn after the 2020 census, which is why control of the state house is critical — Republicans were in control last time this occurred.

“We need a different voice that understands Texas’ rising electorate,” Garcia said.

“We need to make sure that the legislature brings in a redistricting process that is reflective of what that community actually looks like now and that best respects Texas’ voters,” he added.

In other words, redistricting that will give Democrats a distinct advantage over the opposition party.
