To hear the internet tell it, with President Donald Trump’s defense team taking the floor in the Senate impeachment trial, the adults are now in the room and this is not boding too well for lead impeachment manager Rep. Adam Schiff.
Deputy White House Counsel Mike Purpura wasted no time in his opening argument highlighting Schiff mischaracterizing Trump’s July 25 telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his opening remarks at a September hearing on the whistleblower complaint.
In fact, Purpura played a clip of Schiff making up his own version of that call — the Democrat would try to excuse his actions by claiming it was “a parody.”
“That’s fake,” Purpura said at the end of the clip. “That’s not the real call. That’s not the evidence here.”
Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., who had a bird’s-eye view, said he could see the blood drain from Schiff’s face when confronted with his own “made-up words.”
Conference Chairman @SenJohnBarrasso:
When @realdonaldtrump‘s counsel read the transcript of the phone call and then played the video of Adam Schiff with his fictionalized made up script…

“Senator Barrasso, who wears glasses and sits toward the center of the second row on the Republican side, claimed that he saw the blood drain from Rep. Schiff’s face when confronted with his description of the Trump-Zelensky transcript,” Courthouse News reporter Adam Klasfeld tweeted.

For emphasis, Klasfeld shared a Senate seating chart that showed Barrasso was seated in the second row, giving him an up-close perspective.

The White House defense team was so effective in the early going, aided by the words of Schiff, who has a history of “mischaracterizing” the truth — see lying — that there’s some question as to whether they will use the entire 24 hours allotted over three days to make their argument.
Saturday’s proceedings lasted a little more than two hours and will resume Monday at 1 p.m.
Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, told reporters that the job of defending President Trump was accomplished “within two hours.”
“Within two hours I thought that the White House Counsel and their team entirely shredded the case that has been presented by the House managers,” Ernst said.

On this week’s “Watters’ World,” Fox News’ Jesse Watters declared that “it’s over.”
“The president won today,” he said. “After a week of hearing from Adam Schiff, Trump’s team was finally allowed to talk today and in two hours, they demolished the Democrats case. Even the mainstream media admitted they put on a great defense.”
Watters played a few clips of talking heads from the other networks commenting on the job Trump’s defense team did.
“It was like the media had never even heard all of the facts before,” he then said. “They hadn’t. Because Adam Schiff and Democrats set this all up in secret.”
The Fox News host then presented a great, detailed summary of the evidence put forth on Saturday, including an emphasis on testimony from the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordan Sondland, who “presumed” there was a quid pro quo.
“It’s over,” Watters added. “Their whole case is based on someone’s speculation that was wrong. The Democrats have no witness who provides any evidence of a quid pro quo. They never did because it never happened.”
He said Trump’s lawyers “torched the one-sided investigation led by Adam Schiff,” insisting that Democrats “didn’t care about the facts, they only cared about getting Trump impeached by Christmas.”
After stressing that Schiff has no credibility, Watters pointed to polling that shows more Americans are against impeachment than are for it, and that the president is enjoying his highest approval ratings.
“Not what Democrats expected — huge miscalculation force-feeding impeachment down throats,” Watters concluded, before noting that impeachment ratings are even losing to daytime soaps.
