The unabashedly liberal policies of New York City are coming under fire after an illegal alien allegedly sexually assaulted and then murdered a 92-year-old woman. The man in question, Reeaz Khan, is an illegal immigrant from Guyana and had been arrested prior to this incident. Despite pleas from federal immigration authorities, NYC released Kahn in November.
He stands accused of sexually assaulting and murdering Maria Fuertes, who police claim he left “incoherent” but conscious on the sidewalk in 32-degree weather at 2 a.m. She was transported to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries that included a broken spine.
Kahn’s version of events is as infuriating as it is unbelievable. He claims that he was attempting to help Fuertes when “he fell down, his belt broke, his pants fell down and his penis fell near her vagina.”
This case has raised anew the concerns surrounding the implementation of sanctuary policies, which shield illegal immigrants from being subject to the federal immigration authority. This means that if an illegal is arrested in New York City, the city is not obligated to honor any detainer requests sent by ICE. In fact, the NYPD had previously claimed that ICE had never sent a detainer request for Kahn in November, or at the very least that their office had never received one. This prompted the immigration office to actually publish a dated copy of the fax they claim was sent to the department.
“It is the height of hypocrisy for NYC to blame ICE for this tragic crime. The mayor & police chief have continually celebrated that they don’t honor ICE detainers, & to deflect the criticism for this completely preventable murder is incredibly disingenuous & shameful… (1/2) pic.twitter.com/zTQIBIfoR9

Field office director for ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations Thomas Decker didn’t mince words in a statement regarding the incident.
“New York City’s sanctuary policies continue to threaten the safety of all residents of the five boroughs, as they repeatedly protect criminal aliens who show little regard for the laws of this nation,” he stated. “In New York City alone, hundreds of arrestees are released each month with pending charges and/or convictions to return back into the communities where they committed their crimes, instead of being transferred into the custody of ICE.”
Chad Wolf, Acting Department of Homeland Security, issued a tweet on Wednesday expressing similar concerns for the state of the law in New York.
There has been a complete breakdown of law & order in New York City. NYC proudly passed sanctuary city laws & bragged about it for months. But now they, & more importantly, the citizens of NYC are facing the deadly consequences of the sanctuary policies. https://t.co/esXd5yYi1Q

“There has been a complete breakdown of law & order in New York City,” he wrote. “NYC proudly passed sanctuary city laws & bragged about it for months. But now they, & more importantly, the citizens of NYC are facing the deadly consequences of the sanctuary policies.”
Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a rebuttal to Wolf’s assertion, claiming that crime rates are at their lowest in recent history, though not commenting on the case itself. In fact, he seemed to provide a blanket defense of the policies that allowed Kahn to allegedly sexually assault and murder an elderly woman on the street.
For the past 30 years, every single mayor of this city — even your boss’s lawyer — has backed this common-sense approach to working with the federal government to keep our city safe.

New York City has passed its own common-sense laws about immigration enforcement that have driven crime to record lows. There are 177 crimes under NYC law that trigger cooperation with federal authorities, if and when someone is convicted. That policy has kept us safe.

It’s unclear whether Fuertes’ brutal death will be enough to spur leftists into action in overhauling their sanctuary policies, or if her life is a small price to pay for “progress.”
