On Saturday, President Trump extended a powerful hand of support to angry protesters in Iran and warned the Islamic government that “the world is watching.”
Throngs of thousands flooded the streets in Tehran chanting, “Death to the Islamic republic” and “Down with Khameini.” The protests erupted after the government admitted its own military was culpable for shooting down the Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 on Tuesday.
Trump tweeted the following statement in both English and Persian, as courageous demonstrators called for the end of the regime: “To the brave and suffering Iranian people: I have stood with you since the beginning of my presidency and my government will continue to stand with you. We are following your protests closely. Your courage is inspiring.”
To the brave, long-suffering people of Iran: I’ve stood with you since the beginning of my Presidency, and my Administration will continue to stand with you. We are following your protests closely, and are inspired by your courage.

The president followed up with cautionary advice as he backed the dissenting Tehran crowds: “The government of Iran must allow human rights groups to monitor and report facts from the ground on the ongoing protests by the Iranian people. There can not be another massacre of peaceful protesters, nor an internet shutdown. The world is watching.”

Reuters reported chants of “Death to the dictator,” in reference to Ayatollah Khameini, the head of the Iranian state and commander in chief of the country’s armed forces.
Protests continue in Tehran. Protesters are chanting many of the same slogans from #IranProtests of November 2019

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also expressed support for the Iranian people.
The voice of the Iranian people is clear. They are fed up with the regime’s lies, corruption, ineptitude, and brutality of the IRGC under @khamenei_ir‘s kleptocracy. We stand with the Iranian people who deserve a better future. pic.twitter.com/tBOjv9XsIG

The plane that was brought down with a pair of Russian-made surface to air missiles shortly after Iran’s missile attack on U.S. bases in Iraq, killed all 176 people on board shortly after takeoff from Tehran’s airport, to include Iranian citizens.
After days of denial, international pressure caused the regime to finally admit the “disastrous mistake” on Friday. The country’s president Hassan Rouhani came clean with an admission on Twitter …
The Islamic Republic of Iran deeply regrets this disastrous mistake.
My thoughts and prayers go to all the mourning families. I offer my sincerest condolences. https://t.co/4dkePxupzm

Javad Zarif admitted “human error” was involved in the disaster, however, he ultimately laid the blame at the feet of “U.S. adventurism.”
A sad day. Preliminary conclusions of internal investigation by Armed Forces:
Human error at time of crisis caused by US adventurism led to disaster
Our profound regrets, apologies and condolences to our people, to the families of all victims, and to other affected nations.

Some of the protesters carried pictures of loved ones lost in the tragedy. The gathering in Tehran began as a vigil of mourning but ultimately turned into a protest. The Daily Mail reported that four separate crowds gathered across the city in protest, and riot police with batons and shields responded by firing tear gas and water cannons into the crowds.

Iranians were never “united in outraged grief” after killing of Suleimani. That was incorrect reporting.
Their anger against their corrupt, mendacious & repressive regime is deep & wide. As predicted, it would explode again.
And it has. #IranProtests https://t.co/bafRlF4cvc
