As President Donald Trump has Democrats whipped into a fury for drawing a line in the sand with Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, Donald Trump Jr. unapologetically posed with an AR-15.
And, as if that wasn’t enough on its own to send the left into an even bigger frenzy, the magazine on the rifle being held by a smiling Trump Jr. featured a depiction of Hillary Clinton behind bars.
For the record, the president’s eldest son is an avid gun enthusiast, Second Amendment defender, and hunter.
“Nice day at the range. @rarebreedfirearms and @spikes_tactical adding a little extra awesome to my AR and that mag…,” read the caption of the photo.
The well of the AR-15 was modified to resemble the helmet of a Christian crusader, featuring a Jerusalem Cross.
“Lock her up” was a common rally cry for Trump supporters in the 2016 election, as he went up against Democratic nominee Clinton.
The intent to mock Clinton was intentional. Here’s one of two close-ups included in the Instagram post, to ensure that the behind bars design wasn’t missed.
In reporting on the photo, CNBC took care to note a tie back to Muslims with the crusader design.
“The Jerusalem Cross or Crusader Cross was the symbol of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, a crusader state established in the 11th century after Jerusalem was seized from its then-Muslim rulers,” CNBC reported.
A Trump Jr. spokesman harrumphed at any suggestion of a political connection.
“Anyone claiming that the Jerusalem Cross is some sort of political statement, couldn’t be more ignorant. Symbols depicting various historical warriors are about as common in gun culture as hating President Trump is in the oped pages of the New York Times,” the spokesman told the network.
“Don’s Instagram post was strictly about him using a famous meme to mock Hillary Clinton, as he and many others have done on numerous occasions and will surely do again in the future, so long as it continues triggering humorless liberals,” he added.
CNBC also noted that “while Clinton never went to jail, several people in President Trump’s orbit have been locked up, or soon could be.”
An Axios.com poll out last week was cited, showing 29% of Republican voters would consider Trump Jr. for president. Sister Ivanka Trump, a senior White House advisor, received a total 16% in the same poll.
