Four suspected drunken drivers were arrested after a motorist complained they were throwing beer cans… from their horse-and-buggy.
In a post on its official Facebook page, the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office said that it received a complaint from a motorist Sunday afternoon that four men were riding on a buggy through Beaverton Township, in Central Michigan.
The four men appeared to be intoxicated and were allegedly tossing beer cans out of the buggy onto the roadway.
When deputies caught up with the buggy — suffice it to say, it was not a high speed chase — the four gave deputies false information about their ages and refused to give their names.
They were later identified as Levei Mast, 20; Andrew Zook, 19; Joseph Miller, 20; and Joseph Troyer, 19, all from Gladwin County, according to the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies found several open and unopened containers of alcohol in the buggy and “all four subjects were under the influence of alcohol,” the post said.
The subjects were charged with felony obstruction of justice, disorderly person and issued civil infractions for minors in possession of alcohol. A cash surety bond in the amount of $3,500 was set for the four — the horse was not charged.
While there was no indication that the men were Amish, Michigan has a long history of Amish settlement. A branch of the Mennonite church, Amish live in accordance to their interpretation of the bible.
The first Amish settled in the state in 1895, and the population is now approximately 11,000, according to Amish America.
There are 86 church districts in Michigan across 35 settlements, which include several in Gladwin County.
Whether the men are associated with the traditionalist Christian church or not, the idea of them partying hard in a horse and buggy brings to mind the video by “Weird” Al Yankovic, titled “Amish Paradise.”
In what may say more about our society than we care to ponder, the video parody of Coolio’s song “Gangsta’s Paradise” has been viewed more than 76 million times.
An interesting tidbit about the music video is that it features Florence Henderson in the role Michelle Pfeiffer originally portrayed in the Coolio video.
This being the same Florence Henderson who starred as Carol Brady on “The Brady Bunch” sitcom.
Fitting or not, the four men were ripe for ridicule online… here’s a sampling of some of the responses from Twitter:

Why do they appear to be named Jedidiah and have entered our modern era through a time machine from the 1700s? https://t.co/wkmc8ToeTT

If these men are Amish, would it have been within their rights to refuse having their picture taken for a mugshot?

Were those mugshots taken using a snapchat filter? ?
