House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., had some advice for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., in regard to her tactic of not sending the articles of impeachment over to the Senate.
Appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” Scalise said the Democrat-run House has a duty to send the two articles passed along party lines to the upper chamber, adding if Pelosi wants to dictate what takes place there she should run for the Senate.
“It’s our duty to turn it over,” Scalise said. “It’s not like some mechanism she can control.”
“It’s not her role to go over to the Senate,” the GOP lawmaker told guest anchor Mike Emanuel. “She can run for the Senate if she wants to be a Senator, but the House has a role, the Senate has a role. It’s time for the Senate to do their job.”
Scalise also reminded viewers of the Democrats’ rush to impeach Trump.
“For months, she was saying how important it is, they’ve got to remove this president immediately,” he said of Pelosi. “He’s a threat to their whole way of life and then once they pass the impeachment, she doesn’t want the Senate to get the papers to start the trial.”
“They can’t have it both ways,” Scalise said. “I think people see through the charade. It’s a political charade — this is not what our founders intended impeachment to be used for.”
He attributed the impeachment effort to the opposition party being concerned about beating Trump in the 2020 election, saying there was “no crime committed” and that Democrats are simply carrying out “a political vendetta.”
As might be expected, Emanuel asked Scalise about Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s remarks about whether Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was impartial about impeachment.
Scalise downplayed the concern from the liberal Alaska Republican.
“You’ve seen her make statements concerned about what Democrats have been doing and saying as well,” Scalise said.
“The Senate’s going to conduct a fair trial. I have confidence in Mitch McConnell doing that. There wasn’t a fair trial in the House and I think that was very clear,” he said, adding that Democrats “broke a lot of rules to ram through this impeachment charade.”
“The Senate will have a fair trial, and you’ll see an acquittal,” Scalise said. “Everyone knows it will end in an acquittal.”
The lawmaker would tell Emanuel that Democrats “had a weak case,” chiding Pelosi for “trying to carry out her own quid pro quo by acting as if she has some kind of role in the Senate trial.”
“Pelosi is exposing the fact she has no case and trying to have one more bite at the apple,” he said.
“Every one of their witnesses said there was no quid pro quo,” Scalise said of the claim that President Trump tied military aid to Ukraine to that nation conducting a probe of Joe Biden.
