Solomon: Comey and McCabe testimony doesn’t add up in wake of IG report, being looked at closely by DOJ

Investigative reporter John Solomon questioned the actions of the FISA Court in response to the Justice Department Inspector General’s report, saying the court and the FBI seem to be reluctant to impose any discipline against those who committed wrongdoing.

Attorney General Bill Barr or Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, who has the power to appoint judges to the FISA court, may have to intervene, the award-winning journalist said Thursday on Lou Dobbs Tonight, featuring fill-in host Gregg Jarrett.

Solomon added that former FBI director James Comey and former Deputy Director Andy McCabe’s testimony is “being looked at closely,” giving those looking for real justice hope for a 2020 perp walk to beat all perp walks.

“I don’t think McCabe and Comey’s stories add up to the evidence now that has been put into the record by Horowitz,” Solomon said. “I would keep an eye on it. I think they’re two guys whose testimony is being looked at closely.”

The FISA court ordered the FBI to look into previous warrant applications involving Kevin Clinesmith, the FBI lawyer who “doctored” an email to falsify evidence against former Trump campaign aide Carter Page but did not order a review of applications involving other officials who made key omissions and errors, as detailed in the IG report.

Solomon, whose reporting became a critical part of the Democratic Party’s partisan impeachment inquiry, had predicted in early December that the IG report would be “a very, very powerful road map and it’s going to lead to months of debate and additional action, including discipline and possible prosecutions.”

Garrett noted that McCabe was fired from the FBI for lying four times, putting up a graphic detailing those lies, before adding that the former bureau official is suing the federal government for wrongful termination.

“It’s designed to distract us from the fact that he was in the chain of command that approved this very bad FISA,” Solomon said. “It was on his watch that a lot of these omissions and outright lies were presented to the court.”

He and James Comey have tried to pretend they weren’t in this line of approval, yet they were deeply involved,” he added. “They took this case out of the field and took it into headquarters, which is a rare act in itself and now it’s time for them to be held accountable. Andrew McCabe and James Comey were at the head of this machine and so far they have been able to bob and weave — it’s time for the courts and, hopefully, Attorney General Barr to mete out some discipline.”

Former CIA director John Brennan may also have some answering to do, as Garrett noted that U.S. Attorney John Durham, who is investigating the investigators, is now seeking Brennan’s communications.

Solomon said there are two things to watch for.

Was the CIA meddling or probing, targeting Trump before the FBI got involved?” he said. “Did they lay a bread crumb trail for the FBI to follow to led them to Christopher Steel?”

He added there’s another possibility, saying that he has heard that it may be one of the focal points, which is that they’re looking at Comey and McCabe for false statements and they may find corroborative evidence from someone like Brennan or CIA officials that the story “Comey has been giving in testimony to Congress was not true.”

“Brennan told Congress, if I recall, the dossier was not used as part of the intelligence community assessment. And that’s not true,” Garrett noted, prompting Solomon to say that Comey and McCabe played a big role there and that their stories don’t appear to add up.

In a fitting conclusion, Garrett observed, “When rats get locked in a cage, they begin to gnaw at each other.”
