A former University of Portland employee was arrested Friday after allegedly hitting a top administrator at the school over the head with a baseball bat.

Associate Vice President for Student Development Matthew Rygg required 18 staples to have his scalp pieced back together.

Patrick Ell, 52, who was reportedly angry with Rygg for mishandling a sexual assault investigation involving his daughter, was charged with second-degree assault for the attack, KOIN reported.

Ell’s daughter, Clara, was a student at the University of Portland and several years ago he told administration officials about an alleged sexual assault involving his daughter.

After conducting an investigation, the university found the allegations “lacked merit,”  according to The Oregonian — the Ell family was critical of the school for its handling of the case.

More on the incident from the newspaper:

Court documents show Rygg came home Friday night and saw a man hanging out near his house. Rygg told police the man didn’t talk to him, but suddenly began hitting him, and Rygg recognized him as Patrick Ell. He said Ell hit him several times, chased him down the street and hit him more when he tried to call the police. Police said they found Ell a few minutes later and arrested him. He was back in his home watching TV with his family.

Ell was the former assistant director of leadership at the university’s Moreau Center, and according to the affidavit, he quit his job as a result of the incident involving his daughter.

The drunken encounter between Clara Ell and a classmate was detailed by Vice, with Clara claiming she was sexually assaulted while too incapacitated to consent and the other student insisting they had consensual sex.

Apparently, the two had dated before but did not have sex. After a night of partying, Clara, in the first semester of her freshman year, began exchanging texts with the male student, who initiated the contact.

Eventually, he wound up outside her dorm room and she said she opened the door to see if he was outside but doesn’t recall inviting him in, according to Vice.

More from the news source:

But Clara says the whole thing is a blur: the texts, letting Jack into her dorm and her room, removing any clothing—which Jack alleged in a conduct hearing 30 days later that she did. Clara hazily recalls producing a condom from a desk drawer and placing it on a bedside table.

She recalls saying “no” once after Jack was already having sex with her, after he flipped her over and tried to penetrate her anally. He laughed, Clara recalls, and resumed vaginal sex. Clara doesn’t recall when her roommate and their other friend returned to the room and flipped on the light—just that there was “suddenly some yelling and then he laughed a bit and left.”

In a later text, the male student wrote: “I don’t know what’s going through your head right now but if sober you wants us to be just-friends then that’s what will happen. I’m sorry for letting things go beyond that tonight.”

“In case you don’t know this, I would never try to hurt you Clara,” he said in another text message. “I let things go as far as I did because I didn’t think you were any more drunk than I was. I should have known better.”

The next day, the student continued to communicate with Clara.

“I’m sorry what happened happened. But I went down there because I was thinking about you, I wanted to talk, and at most I thought we might kiss again,” he said in a text. “You know we wouldn’t have had sex if you didn’t get a condom—not to mention you took both of our clothes off besides your bra. Don’t get me wrong, I really am sorry that it happened. But I am not solely responsible for it.”

After waiting more than 24 hours, Clara filed an online report with the school’s Title IX Coordinator saying she was sexually assaulted.
