Calling the Democratic party’s impeachment campaign a “bizarre anti-constitutional gimmick,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said the attempt to unseat President Donald Trump has become a “nightmare” for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
The nightmare being that their partisan effort to remove a duly elected president is proving to help Trump.
Appearing Monday on “Fox & Friends,” Gingrich said impeachment is more about the hatred Democrats have for Trump and the idea that they know they cannot beat him in the 2020 election.
“If he is in the election, he is going to win. How do they get him out of the election?” Gingrich said. “This is the most bizarrely anti-constitutional gimmick I think I have ever seen. There is zero basis for what they are doing. Just listen to them talk about it. There is nothing constitutional about trying to impeach a president because you don’t like him. And that’s the bottom line here.”
He then laid out a humorous, albeit accurate take on the left today.
“The Democrats don’t like him,” Gingrich said of Trump. “Left-wing Democrats hate him. They wake up every morning hating him. Then he tweets — that reminds them he is still president and they hate him even more.”
“Left-wing Democrats are very happy attacking Donald Trump,” said the former GOP speaker, comparing that to the UK elections. “Independents and Republicans think it’s a total waste of time and that it is wrong, and [Democrats] have been losing ground.”
Gingrich referenced Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a freshman Democrat from New Jersey, who is switching parties over his opposition to impeaching the president, stressing that the Democrats case for impeachment was always “weak.”
An update Real Clear Politics rolling average reflects the loss of ground referenced.
“With two new polls added this morning, support for impeachment is officially under water,” tweeted RCP’s Tom Bevan on Monday.

Gingrich called out House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and House Judiciary Coommittee chairman Herry Nadler, D-N.Y. for the handling of impeachment.
“They had a very weak case and they gave it to Schiff, who is a liar and, frankly, looks sort of like a Soviet-era prosecutor,” he said. “He is not a very believable person. He then went and did it in secret, and in America nothing cuts off the public faster than telling them it’s going to be in secret.”
“Then they give it to Nadler, who is just terrible on television,” Gingrich said. “Every day this goes on they get weaker and Nancy Pelosi, who is not stupid, has figured out she couldn’t stop it because her left would have cannibalized her.
“So she had to go through with it, but this is a worse nightmare than she expected.”
Gingrich predicted the Senate will “get rid of” impeachment and said that Trump “is more popular than when [the impeachment inquiry] started, his approval in a couple of polls is above 50 [percent].”
