Pam Bondi, special adviser to President Donald Trump, was given an opportunity to respond to disgraced former FBI director James Comey’s appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” where he claimed the FISA warrant process was properly followed.
A key member of Trump’s impeachment defense team, Bondi blasted Comey right out of the water.
“He’s right, the men and women of FBI deserve much better than what they had,” Bondi said. “Much better than what they had in James Comey. That man was fired in disgrace. He must have read a different report than we all read. He presided over the FBI in times worse than when J. Edgar Hoover was at the FBI. That man led the FBI and it’s unbelievable.”
“That Steele dossier was essential to this report,” she continued. “It was fake, we know it was fake. And he says that his people did nothing wrong and first of all, he was the leader. He was the one charged with briefing the president when in fact he was spying on the president.”
The former attorney general for Florida let slip after that assertion that Comey had better lawyer up — which may suggest pending legal action by Trump.
“That guy needs a lawyer, by the way,” she said. “I can’t believe this.”
Bondi went on to say that Comey “repeatedly misled the FISA court,” and she drew attention to then-FBI attorney Kevin Kleinsmith, who doctored an email to mask the fact that former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page was a CIA source, making him appear as a Russian spy, and the fact that agents failed to provide the FISA court with exculpatory evidence, which would have dismissed concerns about possible collusion with Russia.
Fox News host Chris Wallace took care to note that Comey did point out the Justice Department inspector general found no political bias in opening the investigation of the Trump campaign and that it was opened on a legitimate basis, adding that claims made by the president also proved to be inaccurate.
“First of all, Comey was spying on the president when he went to debrief him. Yet they felt compelled to brief Russia and Putin, yet not the candidate and then the President-Elect of the United States,” she countered.
When Wallace pressed her to answer his question, Bondi addressed the issue of there being no bias in deciding to launch the investigation, as determined by DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz.
In doing so, Bondi let it be known that Horowitz did bring in Comey.
“[US Attorney] John Durham disagreed with that,” she said. “The inspector general can only look at DOJ. He can only talk to the people who would talk to him. In fact, he tried to talk to Comey. He brought Comey in, he had to read — Comey kept saying he couldn’t recall, so they had to read him back in his security clearance and he refused to do that because he didn’t want to have to answer for all this.”
“John Durham says he disagrees with that because he has — he can talk to outside entities such as the CIA, many others,” Bondi added. “He can talk to other people, he can talk to other countries. So I think we need to wait and see.
The former prosecutor told Wallace she would come back on after Durham releases his report, reminding viewers that he has paneled a grand jury.
“I would love to come back on her show after Durham answers his investigation and by the way, he has a grand jury,” she stressed. “So a lot of people need to be very, very concerned.”
