On Tuesday morning, House Democrats are expected to do what was inevitable from the very start in their partisan effort to unseat a duly elected president, unveil articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
While the action may be seen as a stain on the American democracy in years to come, for those paying attention impeachment was inevitable.
After a five-week kangaroo court, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., will reportedly hold a news conference to announce two articles of impeachment in a fast-paced charge to hold a vote before the holiday break.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., will be joined by other party leaders to announce the president will be charged with obstruction and abuse of power, The Hill reported, citing a senior Democratic aide as a source.
There is a possible third article reportedly still being considered.
President Trump is expected to be charged with abuse of power for allegedly soliciting Ukraine to investigate a political rival in former Vice President Joe Biden, in exchange for military aid, and obstruction for ordering key officials not to testify and refusing to comply with subpoenas.
The anti-Trump cabal huddled behind closed doors in Pelosi’s office Monday evening and was expected to “work through the night” on the articles, Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., told reporters.
“Our staff has been working on this for quite a period of time,” Cicilline said. “We’re going to work throughout the night.”
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., said as he left that “there will be some announcements tomorrow morning.”
Engel feigned sadness, as if the Democratic Party’s 2 1/2 year campaign to take out Trump weighed heavy on their conscience.
“I think that a lot of us believe that what happened with Ukraine especially is not something that we can just close our eyes to,” he told reporters. “This is not a happy day, but I think we are doing what we have to do.”
Pelosi was tight-lipped about her next move when asked by the Wall Street Journal Monday night at an event about potential articles of impeachment.
“You think I’m going to tell you the articles of impeachment?” Pelosi replied. “We’re in a place where our members, our leadership of our committees of jurisdiction have now gotten the last input.”
Democrats and their media allies have been talking impeachment from Day 1, as the Washington Post ran a story the day Trump was inaugurated, titled “The campaign to impeach Trump has begun.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., posted a video clip online of Pelosi commenting on their fast-paced impeachment effort, acknowledging that the effort has been ongoing for “two and a half years.”
McCarthy tweeted, “We should take Speaker Pelosi at her word when she admits that they have been plotting to impeach the president for the last two and a half years.”

The markup of the articles will likely take place Wednesday or Thursday, according to The Hill. A floor vote in the House to impeach Trump is expected by next week.
