Thanks to left-wing propagandists and their eager media enablers, an untold number of Americans have been led to believe that former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley personally views the Confederate flag as a symbol of “service and sacrifice and heritage.”
In a recent interview with conservative radio show host Glenn Beck, Haley spoke about white supremacist Dylann Roof and the mass shooting he committed at a black church in South Carolina four years ago, when she was still the state’s governor. Because of Roof’s support for the Confederate flag, at the time Haley chose to remove the flag from the South Carolina statehouse.
“South Carolina fell to our knees when this happened,” she said. “This is one of the oldest African-American churches. These twelve people [who were murdered] were amazing people. They loved their church. They loved their family. They loved their community. And here is this guy who comes out with his manifesto holding the Confederate flag and just hijacked everything that people thought of.”
“We don’t have hateful people in South Carolina. There’s always the small minority that’s always going to be there. But people saw it as service and sacrifice and heritage. But once he did that, there was no way to overcome it.”
Listen to her full statement below:
Many South Carolinians did indeed look at the Confederate flag as a symbol of “service and sacrifice and heritage,” including Byron Thomas, a black former University of South Carolina student who penned a column in 2015 detailing his love of the Confederate flag and bemoaning the hatred and bigotry he experiences for that love.
But to the media, facts come second and propaganda comes first. So when a propagandist with the radical left-wing group Media Matters falsely accused Haley of saying that she herself believes the Confederate flag is about “service and sacrifice and heritage,” its drooling media and social media lapdogs pounced.
This isn’t what @NikkiHaley said but this is what propaganda outfit Media Matters wants you to think — and Twitter happily turns these hit pieces into featured content. https://t.co/rP9JQvbbOs

Case in point: Over at Axios, an allegedly esteemed news source founded by former Politico staffers Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen, and Roy Schwartz, its so-called “journalists” literally embedded a false Media Matters tweet right in their “story.”
The site’s purportedly objective, non-biased “journalists” also shared a tweet of their own claiming that Haley had said “the Confederate flag represents ‘service, sacrifice, and heritage.'” Axios was eventually forced to retract the tweet after backlash:
We’ve deleted a tweet saying that Nikki Haley said the Confederate flag represents “service, sacrifice and heritage”.
Our story has been updated to reflect that Haley said: “People saw [the flag] as service, and sacrifice and heritage” https://t.co/oTIoBbXy4z
— Axios (@axios) December 6, 2019
However, as of Saturday morning, Media Matters’ propagandist Jason Campbell’s tweet on the matter still remained embedded in the outlet’s story.
Look:

#Journalism …
In fairness, Axios did at least include a transcript of some of Haley’s actual words.
Other blue checkmark media figures who’ve fallen hook, line, and sinker for Media Matters’ propaganda can be seen below:
Hey, Nikki Haley….
Confederate flag is no better than a Swastika (2013). https://t.co/RyboDD2fNF pic.twitter.com/edvlaBHEw8

Dear Nikki Haley,
The Confederacy existed to protect slavery. The “heritage” you’re defending is slavery.
— Thor Benson (@thor_benson) December 6, 2019
Nikki Haley going full MAGA and racist leading up to 2024. Told ya. This is the only way for a candidate to be appreciated by the Republican Party now. No country for moderates, adults or Never Trumpers. Also the Confederate flag was for treasonous criminals who enslaved people. https://t.co/sjemcDaFZo
— Wajahat “Abu Khadija” Ali (@WajahatAli) December 6, 2019
Um… history would like a word, Ms. Haley… https://t.co/t4JAWqaW7D
— Joy Reid (@JoyAnnReid) December 6, 2019
Remember that brief period of time when Nikki Haley was considered the adult in the Trump Administration? Welp, she just failed 8th grade social studies with this take.
Unless there is another Dylan Roof who was a confederate general or a KKK grand wizard in 1915. https://t.co/TNJPIWJaWa
— W. Kamau Bell (@wkamaubell) December 6, 2019
The latter figure, W. Kamau Bell, works at CNN, of course.
That being said, CNN itself actually did a good job portraying Haley’s words accurately:
Nikki Haley: Dylann Roof “hijacked” the Confederate flag from people who saw it as symbolizing “service, and sacrifice and heritage” https://t.co/2hq4GpiOTN pic.twitter.com/VF7TDDxaOb
— CNN Politics (@CNNPolitics) December 6, 2019
That headline is 100 percent accurate. Well done. But for every piece of good news, there’s invariably some bad news, and the bad news is that the latest edition of “nonpartisan” CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter’s daily newsletter contains not one but TWO instances of fill-in “nonpartisan” writer Oliver Darcy citing Media Matters as a valid source.
If the media want to know why an overwhelming majority of Americans distrust them, this is why.
As correctly noted by The Hill chief Washington correspondent Saager Enjeti, the smearing of Haley and anybody else like her “plays itself out every single day” in media and social media, and all thanks to the left’s propagandists.
“Lies worm their way from left-wing oppo shops and ‘media reporters’ to the pages/airwaves of the most powerful media organizations on this planet,” he tweeted late Friday.
Make no mistake, the smearing of @NikkiHaley today plays itself out every single day on this platform. Lies worm their way from left wing oppo shops and “media reporters” to the pages/airwaves of the most powerful media organizations on this planet
— Saagar Enjeti (@esaagar) December 6, 2019
Haley responded to the smears by retweeting the following posts:
I am shocked — SHOCKED, I tell you — that a bunch of journalists and so-called “conservatives” and “Republicans” think @NikkiHaley said what they think she did about the Confederate flag before actually doing their homework
— Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) December 6, 2019
She clearly is not defending the confederate flag in the video. Nikki Haley also literally removed the Confederate Flag from the South Carolina State Capital despite the outcry from people in her state.
Anyone who falls for Media Matters propaganda is a hack. https://t.co/ZvwidGhLLz
— Greg Price (@greg_price11) December 6, 2019
To be clear, she wasn’t saying she viewed the flag that way, but arguing many South Carolinians viewed it that way. (she says “people saw it as…”) She used a similar equivocation in her announcement on removing the flag. https://t.co/eeYCSjYkZh https://t.co/wMXjvpYaOJ
— Philip Klein (@philipaklein) December 6, 2019
I hope every conservative rains hell into the mentions of every blue check on this site sharing that smearing Media Matters tweet about Nikki Haley. It’s pure garbage and any journalist who wants respect from the general public should never share another one of their posts again.
— Caleb Hull ??? (@CalebJHull) December 6, 2019
If you’re a journalist and you genuinely don’t understand why a huge chunk of the country doesn’t trust or believe your industry, take a look at all of your colleagues sharing a completely false narrative of @NikkiHaley’s remarks from Media Matters…that’s why.
— James Hasson (@JamesHasson20) December 6, 2019
100% stand with @NikkiHaley against the absurd smears of Media Matters, which has done more to destroy the credibility of the media than the media ever could do alone.
This is why nobody trust the media anymore and why it’s important to use quotes around the word “journalists.” https://t.co/BH6qqgfBtZ
— Dave Rubin (@RubinReport) December 6, 2019
Outrage culture strikes again.
So called “journalists,” eager to judge & condemn without knowing the facts or context, pounce on Nikki Haley.
Is this really the culture we want to be? Prone to accusatory outbursts and emotional reasoning?
No, it’s not.https://t.co/cbeRfy98rs
— Dan Crenshaw (@DanCrenshawTX) December 7, 2019
And in her own words:
Thank you ❤️?? https://t.co/zNWJ1XiVAa
— Nikki Haley (@NikkiHaley) December 6, 2019
2015 was a painful time for our state. The pain was and is still real. Below was my call for the removal of the Confederate flag & I stand by it. I continue to be proud of the people of SC and how we turned the hate of a killer into the love for each other.https://t.co/xXanJ8LPTV
