Swalwell attempts to sidestep Dem’s former impeachment stance: ‘I’m going to live in the present’

Failed presidential candidate Eric Swalwell appeared on Fox News’ “The Story with Martha MacCallum” on Wednesday night to make his best case for impeachment, but his pitch went about as poorly as his short-lived presidential campaign.

MacCallum started by pressing Swalwell for the exact timeline of the impeachment inquiry.  Swalwell insisted there is urgency to the inquiry and even suggested Democrats are worried President Trump will influence the upcoming Democratic primary votes.

“I don’t want to put an artificial date on it, but there is an urgency to secure upcoming elections. Voting starts in Iowa and New Hampshire within 60 days. And this president on the July 25 call invokes one of his potential political opponents when he asked a foreign government to involve itself in our elections and so there is an urgency to make sure that those elections are pure,” Swalwell said.

When asked about the reality to the threat that Trump could actually affect those votes, Swalwell invoked the debunked Russian collusion conspiracy theory to claim Trump has already influenced elections.

“You know, we had the Mueller investigation, right? And there was no collusion,” MacCallum said.

“He still did it and it was wrong that he did it,” Swalwell said, ignoring reality. “The president himself with his own ask of the Ukrainians has created this urgency … If he is going to block us, he can’t benefit from us moving with the only evidence that we have.”

In another definitive exchange in the interview, MacCallum played a clip of Jerry Nadler from 1998 where he rails against the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton.

“We must not overturn an election and remove a president from office. Except to defend our system of government or our Constitutional liberties against a dire threat. And we must not do so without an overwhelming consensus of the American people. There must never be a narrowly-voted impeachment or an impeachment supported by one of our major political parties and opposed by the other,” Nadler, who is now one of the biggest supporters of impeachment, is heard saying in the clip.

Swalwell dismissed the comments for the sole fact that they are 20 years old.

“Why was that such a concern back then and not now, Congressman Swalwell?” MacCallum asked the congressman.

“Yeah. Martha, I was 17 years old,” Swalwell said. “And most Americans who are voting today were not tuned in then and so I think let’s focus on what we have right now —”

“So history is no guide and experience doesn’t matter when looking at the past?” MacCallum asked.

“If I could finish,” Swalwell continued. “I’m going to live in the present and say if a small-town mayor in any town in America, anyone watching Fox News today, had the mayor tell the police chief I will give you the police officers that you are asking me for to make your street safer but only if you investigate my opponent. Everyone would say that’s wrong.”

“You haven’t proven a quid pro quo and that’s the problem,” MacCallum shot back. “And that’s what Turley is saying,” referencing law professor Jonathan Turley tearing apart the impeachment inquiry during his testimony in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

“Oh, we have, we have. We have,” Swalwell said.

“And his concern was so clear. He is not a Trump supporter,” MacCallum continued. “He didn’t vote for President Trump, he has been critical of him many times. You need to stick the landing on the quid pro quo.”

“We stuck it. We stuck it,” Swalwell awkwardly responded.

“And you are sticking with it,” MacCallum said.

“We stuck it. I will leave it at that,” Swalwell weakly offered.
