Georgia Gov. Kemp to snub Trump with liberal-leaning senate pick; Matt Gaetz throws down over it.

President Donald Trump and his supporters are not happy with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, a fellow Republican, after it was discovered that he likely plans to appoint Kelly Loeffler to the U.S. Senate. She will be taking over for Senator Johnny Isakson, who is retiring due to health concerns.

While the president encouraged Kemp to appoint Representative Doug Collins, who has a long history of being pro-Trump, it is being reported that Kemp is choosing to go in a different direction to “affirm his support for women and diversity.”

Despite Loeffler also being a Republican, she is reported as having several liberal-leaning positions that are causing some concern among GOPers.

Tea Party Patriots founder Jenny Beth Martin tweeted her disdain for the potential appointment, claiming that it would be a disservice to Republicans.

Appointing Ms. Loeffler to the U.S. Senate wouldn’t just be promoting a liberal to replace a conservative, it would make a mockery of those who cast votes for Senator Isakson, Governor Kemp and President Trump.

Conservatives are also concerned about her support of Democrats and “Republicans in name only” (RINOs), as alleged by the Washington Examiner:

The critics said that Loeffler has contributed to Democrats, though Federal Election Commission reports show that happened years ago. She has been major GOP donor to stalwarts, including Sens. Paul Ryan of Kentucky, Martha McSally of Arizona, John Cornyn of Texas, and the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Florida Republican Matt Gaetz waded into the debate to throw his support behind Trump and Collins, claiming that a Loeffler appointment would hurt the president and betray voters.

Gov. Kemp, do you have any idea how absurd it is to tweet that your big push-back against the “establishment” is a donor who gave $700k plus to Mitt Romney and nothing to Trump until she wanted in the Senate?

Unsurprisingly, Gaetz didn’t back down when members of Kemp’s team started going after him for his views.

Ultimately it will be up to Kemp to decide who he believes is best suited for the position, but at the moment it appears that he has to choose between potentially winning back the support of women at the risk of losing the Trump-supporter vote, or appease Trump and his voters and risk further alienating Republican women disenfranchised with the party.
