On October 27, President Donald Trump announced the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. While this led to widespread praise, those on the late-night comedy circuit were already lining up to mock the official statement – including Trump’s assertion that the ISIS head was bigger than Osama bin Laden.
During the question and answer portion of the announcement, Trump was asked whether he had been briefed on potential successors to al-Baghdadi’s position, he had this to say:
“Yeah. We know the successors. And we’ve already got them in our sights. And we’ll tell you that right now, but we know the successors. Hamza bin Laden was a big thing, but this is the biggest there is. This is the worst ever.”
“Osama bin Laden was very big, but Osama bin Laden became big with the World Trade Center. This is a man who built a whole, as he would like to call it, “a country,” a caliphate, and was trying to do it again.”
For some reason, suggesting that the al-Baghdadi raid was bigger than the bin Laden kill seemed to trigger the leftist late-night brigade, who came out swinging against this statement.
Comedy Central’s Trevor Noah joked that because of bin Laden, he can’t take lotion on planes and walks around “ashy as s***.”
“What are you doing?!” Noah cried in response to Trump’s statement. “You don’t have to pretend this guy is a bigger get than bin Laden. First of all, it’s childish. Secondly, he’s not. Bin Laden changed the entire world forever. It’s 18 years after 9/11 and I still can’t take four ounces of lotion on an airplane. I go on vacation, and my skin is dry as fuck. That’s how bad of a terrorist bin Laden was! We all ashy in these streets because of bin Laden!”
But he wasn’t the only host to complain about that line. Stephen Colbert – apparently offended that someone downplayed the bin-Laden raid overseen by President Obama – also decided to chime in.
“You know how I know that killing bin Laden was a big deal?” Colbert rhetorically asked his audience. “Because Barack Obama never had to say that killing bin Laden was a big deal.” He then went on to say that Trump’s 50-minute speech was much, much bigger than Obama’s 11-minute announcement, so it was “a big deal” in that regard.
Unfortunately for the late-night crowd, Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani just praised President Trump for his “much greater accomplishment” of killing al-Baghdadi

An extremely complementary Ghani lavished Trump with kind words and accolades over the successful mission.
“President Trump, people talked a lot about bin Laden,” Ghani said. “But what you did to eliminate al-Baghdadi, who was an organizer and not a talker, is much greater accomplishment. Congratulations!”
Sort of puts Colbert and Noah to shame, doesn’t it?
